Three Dominate Dubsdread
ORLANDO, Fla. – Dubsdread Golf Course, host to multiple FSGA Championships over the years, played host to the Winter Series Stableford event this week. Dubsdread may be a short golf course, but its quirky tight fairways with small undulating greens make it quite difficult. However, it was no match for Tim Cobb, Chad Ibbotson and Robert Cunningham who won the Mid-Amateur, Senior and Super Senior Divisions respectively.
Mid-Amateur
Round one brought a familiar face to the top of the leaderboard with Mark Allen taking the lead with a tournament low 41 points. Nipping on his heels were Jack Teegarden and Tim Cobb who each had 39 points. Allen’s round consisted of four birdies and three bogeys, which was enough to bring in enough points to grab the lead.
With many people within a few points of the lead, anything was possible at the beginning of round two. With Allen struggling out of the gates, the door was open for Cobb and a newcomer to the top of the leaderboard, Troy Vanucci. Vanucci got off to a hot start and tied it up with Tim Cobb after 36 holes. However, Cobb’s 15-foot birdie putt was enough to seal the deal on the first playoff hole to grab the victory.
Senior
To no surprise after winning two of his last three Winter Series events, Chad Ibbotson got off to another hot start during round one. Ibbotson’s 35 points were good enough to give him a one-point lead over Mike Jackson.
After Ibbotson grabbed the lead, there was no looking back. His 37 points in the second round was enough to give him a win by four points over John Barry and Matthew Avril, who fired rounds of 33 points, 35 points each.
Super-Senior
The Super-Senior division saw a six-time state champion Bobby Lundquist one shot behind Cory Walker, who fired off 38 points during the first round. However, it was not either of these players who came out on top after day two.
Robert Cunningham had 35 points on day one, highlighted by an eagle. He then proceeded to rattle off four birdies over nine holes to secure 43 points, which was the low for the tournament.
