Winter Series - Southern Hills Plantation

Southern Hills Plantation Club - Brooksville

November 27-28, 2017

The Winter Series headed to Southern Hills Plantation in Brooksville, host of the 2017 State Amateur Match Play Championship, where it'd host three divisions on some of Florida's most beautiful days. The Winter Series consists of three divisions, the Mid-Amateur, Senior, and Super-Senior divisions, giving a variety of amateur golfers the opportunity to compete on Florida's best courses.

In the Mid-Amateur division, after the first round, two sat at the top of the leaderboard. After firing an even par, 72, James Weick Jr. and Jason Coolik were going to have to battle it out on the course Tuesday morning. Sitting closely behind, though, was Paul Royak and Jacob Richard who shot 74 and 75, respectively. With another beautiful day at Southern Hills Plantation, the conditions were nothing less than perfect for a final round showdown. With some hiccups in the second, both first round leaders struggled to post a consecutive low number for the final round. Paul Tesori, from Ponte Vedra, backed up his 76 in the first round with an even par, 72 to propel himself to the top of the leaderboard, however, Royak played consistent and fired his second 74 of the tournament. After regulation, there was a tie at the top of the leaderboard, forcing a playoff to find a champion. After four suspenseful holes, it would be Paul Tesori who would defeat Paul Royak and win the Winter Series event at Southern Hills Plantation.

The Senior division boasted a similar result as the Mid-Amateur division. Upon the completion of the first round, Chip Kelly and Brian Coffey were tied for first place with a one over-par score of 73. Two more men, David Muldowney and David Tassell were close behind the leaders after shooting a 74 and 75, respectively. The final round ended up being a battle between Chip Kelly and David Tassell. Kevin Macy, who shot an 80 in the first round, moved up the leaderboard drastically after shooting a two under-par round of 70, tying the low score of the tournament throughout all the divisions. First round co-leader, Chip Kelly bettered his first round score by shooting an even-par 72, finishing the tournament with a one over-par total of 145. David Tassell made a charge to the top spot by matching Macy's low round and shooting a two under-par round of 70. Tassell's under-par round would put him in a tie for the title along with Chip Kelly, therefore forcing a sudden death playoff to crown the champion. Playing the 18th hole, Tassell would prevail and win the first playoff hole to capture the Senior Division title.

In the Super-Senior division, Bobby Lundquist held off his fellow competitors to take the title by three strokes over Kim Schwencke. In the first round, Lundquist found his way to the top of the leaderboard after shooting a two over-par, 74. He sat just one shot ahead of three of his competitors, making the final round anyone's tournament. Even with eight golfers within three strokes of Lundquist, he stuck to his game and backed up his first round with an even-par, 72 for his final round. The only player in the Super-Senior Division to shoot even-par, Lundquist would claim a three stroke victory of Schwencke and claim his fourth Winter Series title.

The Winter Series makes its next trip to the Country Club of Ocala on December 11th and 12th. Entries for the Winter Series event at the Country Club of Ocala closes Wednesday, November 29th at 11:30 P.M.
