Winter Series - Indian Spring CC (West)
February 27-28, 2023
BOYNTON BEACH, FLA. – Indian Spring Country Club played host to the most recent installment of the Winter Series events on Monday and Tuesday. Sunny conditions on both days gave way to some great play in the 36-hole stroke play competition, and Brian Bassett (Mid-Amateur), Doug Clapp (Senior), and Daniel Russo (Super-Senior) came away victorious.
Mid-Amateur Division
Brian Bassett, of Naples, carded the only under-par round on Monday, shooting a two-under 69 on the Par-71 West course. Three birdies and a lone bogey gave Bassett a four-shot lead heading into Tuesday. Andrew Sharp was in solo second after day one shooting a two-over 73, one shot ahead of Michael McDermott who carded a three-over 74.
With a four-shot lead on Tuesday, Bassett was able to take his foot off the gas and cruise to the finish line. After shooting the low round in his division on day one, he repeated that feat by shooting a two-over 73, putting him at even par for the tournament. Bassett’s solid play on both days gave way to a nine-shot victory over two players. Peter Hamacher and Zackery Luce finished in a tie for second after shooting second-round scores of 74 and 75, respectively.
Senior Division
After day one in the Senior Division, Charles Siebrecht of Jupiter held a one-shot lead after shooting a two-under-par 69. One shot behind him was Thomas Kelly, whose one-under 70 was the only other under-par round in the Senior Division for the first round. Eventual champion Doug Clapp sat three shots back after firing a one-over 72.
With a comeback necessary in round two, Clapp shot the round of the tournament with a four-under 67 on Tuesday, including a hole-out eagle two on the par-four 15th hole. This ultimately gave way to a two-shot win over first-round leader Siebrecht, who shot one over 72 and finished in solo second. Rounding out the top three of the Senior Division was Thomas Kelly of Fort Myers, who completed the tournament at even par.
Super-Senior Division
At the conclusion of the first round, the Super-Senior Division was up for grabs with multiple players shooting under-par rounds. Daniel Russo and Kevin Macy led the way after they both shot three-under 68 on Monday. This was good for a one-shot lead over Jim Stone who sat in solo third with a two-under 69. The only other under-par round in the first round belonged to Joe Shaktam of Coral Springs with a one-under 70.
The second round of the Winter Series event seemed to provide a more difficult challenge to the Super-Senior players. Peter Metzler of Lake Worth fired the only under-par round matching the tournament-low score of four-under 67 after going bogey-free with four birdies. His great play forced a playoff at three-under par with Russo, who shot even-par 71 in round two. With a par on the first playoff hole, Russo came out victorious, earning his first Winter Series win.
