Capps and Gulliksen Victorious Again As History Echoes Its Patterns
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — As history has a tendency to repeat itself, Ty Capps and Tyler Gulliksen raise the Two-Man Shoot-out trophy for the second year in a row. This year's championship, held at Bonita Bay Club (Bay Island Course), brought pristine conditions for the 54 hole tournament. The teams were challenged to different formats, all leading to the Two-Man Shoot-Out on Sunday.
The Championship, which began Saturday, had teams competing in Modified Alternate Shot. Capps and Gulliksen were 1-under as they rounded the turn, and then were able to add one more on the back nine for a final score of 70 (-2). Michael Maxwell Jr and Will Davenport, in a bogey-free round, had a 1-stroke lead to finish the day against the defending champions, carding a score of 69 (-3). The duo of James Preston and Marc Dull tied for first on the opening day, also ending at 3-under. Notably, the pair of Brad Hartfield and Darren Lundgren would walk away as the low round with a final score of 67 (-5).
As the pairs competed in a Scramble format, Davenport and Maxwell Jr would see another bogey-free round, finishing with a 61 (-11). However, Capps and Gulliksen, despite bogeying the first hole, would birdie six holes just on the front nine to also walk in with 11-under. Preston and Dull missed the mark by 1 stroke to finish their day with a 62 (-10). The team of Scott Turner and T J Shuart had the low round in the scramble format with a 60 (-12).
The championship concluded on Sunday with the Four-Ball format. Capps and Gulliksen kicked off strongly with a 5-under front side, clinging to a narrow one-stroke advantage over Davenport and Maxwell Jr, who trailed closely at 4-under. With the prospect of yet another triumph, Capps and Gulliksen fired off, notching an eagle and three birdies on the back nine to secure their title as champions once more.
Davenport and Maxwell Jr fell just short of the mark. Their performance, highlighted by two eagles and four birdies, resulted in a final score of 65 (-7), leaving them trailing behind the victorious duo of Capps and Gulliksen. Davenport and Maxwell Jr walked away with 69-61-65 to secure their spot at second place, while Preston and Dull finished in third.
