Przybylski, Jones, & Nunez Win
The fall weather finally arrived in Florida, just in time for the first Winter Series event of the 2015-2016 schedule! TPC Eagle Trace, in Coral Springs hosted the Individual Winter Series event where Glenn Przybylski, Scott Jones, and Paul Nunez were crowned champions.
The players were faced with breezy and wet conditions during the first round. Baldonick Fernandez, of Pembroke Pines led the 40-54 Age Division after an opening round of 75. Fleming Island resident, Scott Jones took the lead with a round one 74 in the 55-64 Age Division, while James Byer, of Lantana matched Fernandez’s 75 from a couple tees forward to lead the 65 and Over Age Division. All three round one leaders are no strangers to Winter Series events and would enter round two being trailed closely. In the 40-54 division Glenn Przybylski, of Frankfort, Illinois, stalked the lead by two strokes followed by Jim Marcelak and Scot Pitetti tied for third with 79’s. Sarasota resident, John Vaccaro chased Jones by one stroke in the 55-64 division, similarly Jim DuBois Jr was one behind of Byer in the 65 and over division.
Glenn Przybylski came from behind in round two to finish four-strokes ahead, winning the 40-54 division. With scores of 77-75--152, Przybylski moved ahead of first round leader Baldonick Fernandez who tied for second with David Garratt after a tournament total of 156. In the 55-64 division, Scott Jones went wire-to-wire after a second consistent round of 74 (148 tournament total) to win by two strokes over John Vaccaro. Vaccaro posted two identical rounds of 75, for a tournament total 150, to claim second place seven shots ahead of Mark Rubin. The excitement occurred in the 65 and over age division with a playoff between Paul Nunez, Jim Rollefson and James Byer, who all finished with a tournament total 153, to determine the winner. The three-way playoff started on the challenging ninth hole where Nunez, of Hobe Sound and Rollefson, of Naples advanced after two birdies. Both players continued past the tenth hole after two pars and headed to number eleven. Rollefson hit the greenside bunker after his second shot while Nunez hit the green and sunk his birdie putt for the victory.
Two highlights from the final round on Tuesday came from John Latowski and Steve Gallant! Latowski, of Port Saint Lucie posted the tournament low, one under-par 71 in the cooler temperatures. Bonita Springs resident, Steve Gallant scored a hole-in-one on the par three 17th! Congratulations to both 65 and older players.
The Winter Series is for players 40 years and older, and runs from late November through early March. Players will compete in one of three age divisions (40-54, 55-64 and 65 & Over) based on their age for the final event. A season long points list is kept through the winter earning players exemptions into 2016 FSGA State Championships. The next stop for the Winter Series will be at River Hall Country Club in Alva, December 7-8.
