The Super-Senior Amateur Match Play is a great chance for the more experienced players in Florida to compete for a state Championship, in the always entertaining format of match play. There are three divisions in the Championship; Championship Division (open to any players 65+), 70-74 Age Division, and 75 & Over Age Division.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Terry Werner brought home the hardware in the Super-Senior Match Play Championship, while Tom Grady and Pete McDade won the 70-74 and 75 and Over divisions, respectively. Crown Colony Golf and Country Club proved to be a good test of golf with firm greens and tight fairways.
Championship Division
Werner began his quest to victory by firing a 2-over 74 in the stroke play seeding round. From there, he took down Doug Harris, 2 up, Doug LaCrosse, 4 & 3, and Steve Sponder, 1 up, to advance to the Finals. He faced Greg Nelson in the Finals, defeating him, 1 up.
The final match was back and forth throughout the day. Nelson got off to a steady start, enough to give him a 1-up lead going into the back nine. From there, Werner began to make a move, winning three holes in a row. Nelson began to battle back, but it was not enough as Werner won the match needing to play all 18 holes.
70-74 Age Division
Grady of Bradenton won the 70-74 division by starting off with a 6-and-5 win over Donald Staton. He proceeded to beat Bobby Lundquist 1 up and needed 19 holes to capture the victory over John Hall.
Just like the championship division, the match between Grady and Hall was back and forth all day. In the first and only playoff hole, Hall hit two balls in the water and the match was eventually conceded to give Grady the win in the 70-74 division.
75 & Over Age Division
McDade was the champion in the 75 and over division. He beat Thomas Jung 5 and 4, Jim DuBois in 20 holes, and finally Bob Rogoff in the final match, 4 and 3.
McDade got off to a hot start in the Finals, winning four of the first six holes. Rogoff attempted to claw back from an early deficit winning holes 12 and 13, but McDade came back with wins on the following two holes to end the match.
