Turned out to be an excellent day for golf at Lake Jovita Country Club in Dade City. The overcast sky kept the temperature extremely pleasant for this time of year and the course was very playable in spite of all the rain recently. Mike Stevens accumulated the most points and has built an insurmountable lead in the season-long Race to Mount Dora for the Stevens Trophy. Earl Hines put in another solid performance leading the way with 2 over and has moved to the top of the Heritage Trophy standings. He also teamed with Pat Sheffield to capture team honors. Also welcome to new member Nick Nugent.

In spite of a brief weather delay, the Florida Hickory Golfers enjoyed a nice outing at the Links of Sandpiper in Lakeland. Congrats to Earl Hines fresh off abdominal surgery registering a plus 11 and Bill Geisler accumulating 32 points to top the leader boards. We also welcomed new member Charles Johnson to hickory play as our group gets a bit bigger with each event. Hines also teamed with David Webster to win the blind draw with a plus 10 total.

The Florida Hickory Golfers teed it up at one of our favorite spots at Sara Bay CC in Sarasota. This was the site of the first 36 holes of the famous match between Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones in 1926. The Donald Ross course is still plenty of challenge for hickory clubs and the greens are every bit as tough as Pinehurst #2. Jacksonville’s Steve Powell accumulated 28 points to take top honors in the gross division while home grown product Gary Cole took net honors with plus 7.

Nice to see Alice Brown back out and welcome to Florida State Golf Association’s Aaron Skoviera who played his first full round of hickory golf acquitting himself very well with 21 points. Team honors went to the homers of Shawn Pierson and Gary Cole with plus 6, proving that local knowledge is an advantage. Special thanks to Gary who arranged food for us upon completion of play.
