Parent-Child Championship

Walt Disney World Resort and Grand Cypress Resort - Lake Buena Vista

July 23-24, 2016

The Parent-Child Championship has become an annual event for many families. The tournament is open to everyone, including grandparents who want to play with a grandchild and professionals who want to compete with their child or grandchild. There is no maximum age limitation for the parent or child. The event consists of two divisions; junior and regular. In the junior division, the child must be between 6-12 years of age, and in the regular division the child must be 13 or older.

The regular divisions were split on the Palm, Magnolia, and Lake Buena Vista courses, as well as Grand Cypress Golf Club (North and South).  These teams played 36 holes of modified alternate shot.

In the 34 and older division, Gary and Andrew Saft captured the win by two strokes after two impressive rounds of 66, 132 total (-12). Len and Leonard Schonfeld tied 2015 31 and older Champions, Charles and Michael Kovaleski, for second place with a 134 total (-10). In fourth place alone finished Michael and Michael Craig Brown who posted rounds of 65-73—138. The 34 and older teams started the tournament on the Magnolia Course and finished on the Palm Course.

Jordan and Ray Wenck shot two rounds in red numbers, 70-71-141 (-3), to win the 23-33 division by two strokes. Mark and Tyler Wilkins posted an impressive 69 (-3) to finish in second place with 143 total (-1). The teams played the Palm Course Saturday and completed the tournament at Lake Buena Vista.

After two steady rounds of 72 and 70, the team of Edward and Nate Kosarich took home the trophies with a two under-par 142 total. Johnny and Michael Schlager played a spectacular second round at Grand Cypress carding a 67 for a 137 total (-7). Michael Schlager is a professional and is not eligible for prizes but can celebrate shooting the low total of the division. David and Austin Witt finished third with steady rounds of 71-72-143 (-1).  Lake Buena Vista was conquered first by this division followed by Grand Cypress.

In the 16 and younger division, Brian and Cooper Smith prevailed with a victory by a single stroke over Steve and Miles Albright. The Smith’s and Albright’s both posted a first round of 70 at Grand Cypress. Brian and Cooper stole the win after carding a 65 on the Magnolia Course for a 135 total (-9). After a second round of 66, Steve and Miles took second place with a 136 total. David and Joshua Perna scored an exciting second round of 65 to finish in third place, 137 total (-7).

~ New for 2016, we've expanded! Four courses will be used for the Championship instead of three ~

~ Magnolia, Palm, Lake Buena Vista, and The N/S Course at Grand Cypress ~

A tradition in Florida for more than 20 years, the FSGA Parent-Child Championship, includes men, women, boys and girls of all ages.  Parents and Grandparents are eligible to play with their children and grandchildren in one of the multiple age divisions, which allows everyone to participate. Teams with children older than 12, play eighteen holes each day.  All ages use a modified alternate-shot format that promotes a great team atmosphere.  Different ages also play a variety of tee lengths to make sure that everyone is playing from the correct distance.  All rounds begin with morning shotgun starts to allow time for players and families to enjoy all of the Orlando attractions (such as Sea World, Universal, Magic Kingdom, Wet 'n Wild, etc.) in the afternoon.  Join the hundreds of families that have made the Parent-Child Championship an annual tradition. The Courses

Disney's Magnolia and Palm courses played host to the former Children's Miracle Network Classic, a mainstay on the PGA Tour schedule for the past 30 years.  Previous winners of the event include Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Lucas Glover, and David Duval.

The original North-South combination, marked by sharply ledged fairways, tall shaggy mounds and plateau greens perched above water or sand, is a demanding, target-style test.
