NAPLES, Fla. – Victor Herrera and Rachel Gomez became first-time Florida Junior Tour winners on Sunday at Royal Palm Golf Club. Herrera won with a 1-under 143 in the Boys 13-15 Division, while Gomez was victorious in the Girls 13-15 Division with a 2-over 146.
Boys 13-15
Herrera birdied the final hole to pick up the one-shot victory at Royal Palm, carding the only under-par score for the tournament. The Doral native opened the tournament with an even-par 71, starting the day with a bogey-free front side, to sit in fourth place.
Beginning the final round two shot back of the leader, Herrera got the day started with a 1-over front nine with two bogeys and a birdie. He finished the day strong, with a bogey-free back side, birdieing the 11th and adding another on the final hole of the day.
His final-round 71 secured the one-shot victory, as he was the only player in the field to post two even-par or better rounds.
Asher Joseph took home a runner-up finish at even-par 144, carding rounds of 73-71. Nicolas Bencomo used rounds of 76-69 to earn third place. Three players finished tied for fourth at 2-over 146: Emile Lebrun, Camden Goldknopf and Jaxon Brown. Lebrun recorded a final-round 68, the low round of the tournament.
Girls 13-15
Gomez finished the weekend at 2-over 146 to take home the two-shot victory and her first FJT victory. She began the tournament with a 2-over 73 to sit two shots back of the leader, Sophia Dyer.
Gomez got off to a steady start in the final round with four-straight pars and a birdie on the 14th. After two-straight bogeys, she birdied back-to-back holes to make the turn at 1 under for day.
The Pembroke Pine native finished the day with a 2-over back side to post a final-round 73 and secure the victory.
Dyer, who held the first-round lead, finished in second at 4-over 148 with a final-round 77. Her 71 in the first round was the only under-par round in the Girls Division. Addison Klonowski and Sophia Hong tied for third at 6-over 150.
