Melson Wins Mid-Senior Championship for 2nd Time

Paul Melson fired a final round 67 on the Cypress Course at Bonita Bay Club East in Naples to win his second Florida State Mid-Senior Championship.

Paul Melson, of Plantation, captured the 2006 Championship with a three round tournament total of 8-under par 208. After the first round of play, Melson led the field shooting a 5-under par 67 on the South Course at the Club at Mediterra. With a second round 74 on the Cypress Course at Bonita Bay East, Melson rebounded in the final round to match his first round score of 67 to clinch the Championship by six strokes. Melson won the 2003 Mid-Senior Championship and this year’s Four-Ball Championship with partner Edward Kenny. Rick Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, and Bret Voisin, of Orlando, shared second place with a 214 tournament total. Voisin shot rounds of 72-69-73 and Woulfe, the 2005 Senior Player-of-the-Year, posted even par in the first round and a pair 71’s in the final two rounds. Jackie Miller, of Naples, finished in fourth place with 215 total.

For those 40 years of age and above, the Mid-Senior Championship features 54 holes of stroke play over three days. The field will be cut to the low 70 plus ties after 36 holes.

The two Tom Fazio courses at Bonita Bay Club East, Sabal and Cypress, are ranked No. 72 and No. 74 on Golfweek’s top 100. They are also Audubon Signature Sanctuaries. Tom Fazio also created two 18-hole championship courses at The Club at Mediterra. The courses have been certified as the world’s first 36-hole Audubon International Silver Sanctuary and was also honored by Golf Digest with the 2002 National Private Course Environmental Leaders in Golf award.

ELIGIBILITY

Must be age 40 or older as of August 18, 2006, and be a member of the FSGA.

ENTRY FEE

$200 ($190 for online entry). Includes cart fees for tournament rounds and prizes.

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

54 holes of stroke play, cut to low 70 plus ties after after 36 holes.

COURSES

Cypress at Bonita Bay East and South at Mediterra.

CARTS

Players are responsible for practice round cart fees.

DEFENDING CHAMPION

David Sutton, from Maitland, fired a 72-71-68-211 at World Golf Village to win the Championship.
