FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kelvin Hernandez and Layla Pedrique became first-time Florida Junior Tour winners on Sunday at Fairwinds Golf Course. Battling windy conditions throughout the tournament, Hernandez and Pedrique came out on top in the 13-15 FJT event.
Boys 13-15
Hernandez picked up the win in the Boys Division, firing two red numbers for the weekend and finishing with a 7-under 137. He began the weekend with a bogey-free 69, birdieing two of his final four holes of the day, to take a share of the 18-hole lead.
The Puerto Rico native continued his bogey-free play in the final round, starting the round with a bogey-free front side with two birdies. Hernandez added back-to-back birdies to start out his back nine. He finished the day with a birdie on the 17th and his lone bogey on the weekend on the 18th.
His carded a final-round 68, the low round of the weekend, to earn the two-shot victory.
Matvey Golovanov took home the runner-up finish, posting rounds of 70-69 to finish at 5-under 139. Reed Greyserman finished third at 3-under 141, with rounds of 70-71. Hernandez, Golovanov and Greyserman were the lone three players in the field to post two under-par rounds for the weekend.
Girls 13-15
Pedrique went wire-to-wire to take her first FJT victory, finishing the weekend at even-par 144. The Palm Beach Gardens native opened the tournament with a 1-under 71, beginning and ending the day with a birdie.
Starting the final round with a three-shot lead on the field, Pedrique carded a 3 over on the front nine. She turned it around on the back side with three birdies to finish the day with a 1-over 73. She secured the one-shot win with an even-par 144 for the weekend.
Rachel Gomez used rounds of 74-71 to finish second at 1-over 145, while Gabriella Albert finished third at 6-over 150, with two rounds of 75.
