Junior Team Champions Crowned

Four Junior Programs Take Home State Titles at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach

Sixty-two junior teams representing their junior programs competed this weekend in the 2012 Florida State Junior Team Championship at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach.

In the Boys 16-18 age division, the Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association (pictured right) secured the win by two strokes with a tournament total of one-over par 289 on the Dunes Course. After a first round of nine-over par 153, the Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association trailed by seven strokes. In the final round, the team played solid to post an impressive eight-under par 136 for the victory. After a first round of 78, Derron Peyton came out firing in the final round with a seven-under par 65 to carry his team to victory. He was joined by team mates Anthony Gabriele and Ryan Lynch who were also key contributors. Samuel Uhland of the North Florida Junior Golf Association captured low individual honors after rounds of 69-70.

In the Girls 16-18 age division, the Greater Tampa Junior Golf
Association (pictured right) secured the win by two strokes with a
tournament total of one-over par 289 on the Lakes Course. The girl’s team posted a 149 in the first round and posted a final round of 148 for a tournament total of 297 for the title. Anna Newell, Emmy Martin, and Madison Glennie, represented the winning team. Newell also took home low individual honors with a tournament total of two-over par 146.

In the Boys 13-15 age division on the Lakes Course, the Emerald Coast Junior Golf Tour (pictured left) won the title with a tournament total of 293. Leading the way for their wire-to-wire victory was Brock Ochsenreiter, who fired rounds of 71-74 as Steven Shephard posted a 75-73 and Tyler Cohen recorded a 79-79. Josh August, of the Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association, took home low individual honors with a tournament total of two-under par 142.

Playing at the Dunes course, the Gold Coast Junior Golf Foundation (pictured left) captured the girl’s 13-15 age division by three strokes with a tournament total of 314. Claire Fitzgerald, Julia Durkin both posted a tournament total of 157, and shared top individual honors. Tanya Eathakotti fired a final round of 79 to help the team capture the title.

Teams of three, representing their junior programs, competed in 36-holes of stroke play with the total of the low two of the three gross scores counting for each round. This event is open to junior programs that provide organized tournaments, instruction or clinics which are open to all junior golfers in the community. There are four divisions; boys 16-18, boys 13-15, girls 16-18 and girls 13-15. Competitors played on Sandridge Golf Club’s Dunes and Lakes Courses.

The 2012 Junior Team Championship is being held at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach, FL. Sandridge offers two 18 hole championship layouts designed by Ron Garl, the Dunes course which opened in April 1987 and the Lakes course which opened in December 1992. With an island green on the front nine to rolling hills on the back nine, the Dunes course winds around an old ridge that runs up the East Coast of Florida that was once used for mining operations. The Lakes course features one of the toughest holes in all of South Florida, the par 4 14th with an island green.

 

Eligibility

Open to junior programs that provide organized tournaments, instruction, or clinics that are open to all junior golfers in your community. National or statewide tours are not allowed to participate. Junior programs may select the individuals they send to the Team Championship by any criteria they select, however all three players must be directly involved with the local program listed on the entry form.Only one team ("A" team) from each program will be accepted per division prior to the close of entries. Additional teams ("B", "C" and "D" teams) will be accepted on a space available basis after the entry deadline based on order of receipt of entry.

$180 per team ($60 per person)

Championship Format

36 holes of stroke play.  Maximum of three players per team. Total of the low two scores per round of the three gross scores for each team will count. 

Two courses will be utilized.  Players will play the same course both days.  Course assignments are as follows: Boys 16-18 Division and Girls 13-15 Divisions will play the Dunes Course.  Girls 16-18 Division and Boys 13-15 Divisions will play the Lakes Course. Course assignments are subject to change pending number of entries received in each division.

60 teams; 120 players

Boys 16-18 will play approximately 6600-6800 yards
Girls 16-18 will play approximately 5500-5700 yards
Boys 13-15 will play approximately 6300-6400 yards (maximum on Lakes Course is 6,100)
Girls 13-15 will play approximately 5300-5500 yards

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available one week prior to the Championship on a space available basis at either golf course.  Practice rounds are restricted to after 12:00 PM on weekends and holidays. The price for a practice round is $25.00 + tax. To schedule your practice round call (772) 770-5000.

 

Carts

All players must walk and carry their own clubs (Pull carts permitted). Use of a caddie is not authorized. Each program will be given one cart free of charge, but must follow the published policy (available on site). Additional carts may be rented for $25 per cart per day on a first-come, first-served basis.

Defending Champions

The Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association won the boys 16-18 age division while the Ziegler Golf School took the girls 16-18 age division. The North Florida Junior Golf Foundation won the boys 13-15 age division as the Greater Tampa Junior Golf Association claimed the top spot in the girls 13-15 age division at Orange Lake.

Coaches

Each team is allowed ONE Coach.  Only that coach may give advice after the completion of a hole and before the start of the next hole.  Each Coach MUST register themselves as the team coach at the registration table to receive their team packet.

 

Coaches/Spectator Carts

Each junior program will receive one cart free of charge for each day of competition to be used by a Coach.  Other coaches and spectators may rent additional carts for $25 plus tax each day.  Carts are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The FSGA requests these carts be used to assist in evacuation of players if required.

Conditions; Schedules

The FSGA Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee reserves the right to alter any of the conditions, provisions and/or schedules.  The decision of the Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee in any matter will be final.

Registration

There will be a registration table located outside the Golf Shop. All players and coaches are expected to register before the first round. 

 

Awards

Crystal trophies will be awarded to each member and the coach of the winning team. Also, each member of the winning teams, and individual champions, will receive three exemptions to the Florida Junior Tour.

Deadline

Junior Programs may, through their Junior Program Coordinator, reserve a spot (with a fully-paid entry) without team member's names prior to the closing date.
