Bent Pine Golf Club, in Vero Beach, presented the boys’ 13-15 age division with cooler temperatures on Saturday leading to seven scores in the red and a total of nine players at even par or better. Alberto Martinez and Bryan Teoh Wiyang led the field after round one with impressive four-under par, 68’s. Martinez, of Weston, started his first round on the tenth hole and was one of three players that eagled the par five 14th hole. Alberto scored a total of five birdies and carded an exceptional 31 at the turn, followed by a 37 on his final nine-holes. Bryan, of Jupiter, played great golf as well, posting three birdies and two bogeys on the front-nine followed by four birdies and one bogey on the back-nine for a 35-33—68. Leopoldo Herrera III and Jude Kim were not far behind, tied for second place, carding two-under par 70’s. There would be a tight race heading into the final round with a leader board of low scores.
Wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour challenged the players during Sunday’s final round where Bryan and Alberto battled for first place
honors. Bryan Teoh Wiyang was victorious after scoring five birdies on holes two, four, five, seven, and ten for a final round even par 72, tournament total 140. Alberto stayed close to Bryan throughout the round but faltered with two bogeys for a 37-36—73 round two, tournament total 141, and second place finish. Two players, Genki Sadato, of Treasure Island, and Jude Kim, of Plantation, tied for third at 144. Sadato posted one of the only under-par scores of the day with a 71 for a 73-71—144. Bryan earned his first win during his first Florida Junior Tour event at Bent Pine Golf Club.
Megan Ikeda, of Windermere held the lead by one-stroke in the girl’s division after round one with an even par, 72. Megan started her round with a bogey free front-nine and carded one birdie on the par four eighth hole to make the turn with a 35 en route to an even par finish. Eustis resident, Julia Towne, chased the lead in second place at one-over par, 73, and Katie You stood alone in third place with a three-over par, 75.
The final group of girls during round two, Katie You, Megan Ikeda, and Julie Towne, all took home trophies on Sunday. Katie You, of Windermere, fought her way from third place with an amazing front-nine, turning at one-under par with birdies on her first and ninth holes. Katie captured her first Florida Junior Tour win with consistent rounds of 75-76—151. Falling to second place, one-stroke behind, Megan struggled on her final nine holes as the wind picked up speed and finished the tournament with a total 152 (72-80). Julie fell to a final round 81 and tournament total 154 to finish alone in third place.
