Women's Net Championship

Quail Creek Country Club - Naples

September 10-11, 2016

Sunny skies and warm temperatures were present all weekend in Naples as Quail Creek Country Club hosted the third Women’s Net Stroke Play Championship, September 10-11.

No stranger to the Florida State Golf Association, Kimberly Byle, of Dunedin, stood in first place by three strokes after round one, firing a net 68.  Following close behind her was Beatriz Niemeyer with a one-under par 71 along with Peggy Butts and Tinker Sanger who both carded even pars.

The Forward Division saw five numbers in the red with a tight leader board heading into the final round. Janet Strong, of Saint Petersburg, led the division with a tournament low of 67, followed by Susan Lee's 69 and three players tied for third at 70, including Terry Tipton, Kathleen Aldrige-Cooper and Sharon Sheline.

Quail Creek’s Creek Course proved difficult during Sunday’s final round, owning up to its name as difficult water hazards tested all players in the field. In the end, Byle (pictured left) was able to stay steady and continue her lead to finish first in the Middle Division with a two round total of 68-75-143. In similar fashion, Niemeyer, of Bradenton, also played steady to secure second place with a tournament total of 147, while Tinker Sanger, of North Palm Beach, captured solo third.

Just like Byle, Janet Strong (pictured right) did not give up her lead, capturing first place in the Forward Division by three strokes, posting a final total of 67-74-141. Strong’s three under-par total marked the tournament’s low finish. Quail Creek member, Terry Tipton, was one of four who tied for second place in the Forward Division. Along with Tipton, Kathleen Aldridge-Cooper, Sharon Sheline and Susan Lee all finished tied for second with even par 144.

Quail Creek Country Club will play host to the 2017 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship next September.

Suggested Handicap Guidelines

The following should be considered when selecting divisions:

  • Middle Division - 15.0 and Under
  • Forward Division - 16.0 and Over

Committee Discretion: The Championship Committee reserves the right to move any player out of the Forward Division if their handicap is significantly lower than the majority of the competitors in that division, and their scoring history does not reflect the need to play from the Forward Division.

Handicaps

  • All players will play to 100% of their course handicap
  • Each player must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index no higher than 34.0
  • The handicap of September 1, 2016 will be used to establish course handicaps

Flighting

The Middle and Forward Divisions will be pre-flighted based on individual handicaps.

Generally, divisions of more than 14 individuals will be flighted, however the Committee reserves the right to flight based on the number of individuals and/or the range of handicaps.

Breaking Ties

All Divisions - Ties for first place in each flight of the Middle and Forward Divisions will be broken by a modified USGA tie break method.  The final day 18 hole net respective score will be used to determine the first place individual. (If there is still a tie, the final 9 holes of the last day (holes 10-18) will be used to determine the winner.  If there is still a tie, the final 6 holes are used; then if needed the final 3 holes; then the final hole; then by coin flip).

Practice Rounds

Practice rounds are available six days prior to the event on a space available basis. The price for a practice round is $30.00 + tax. Please call (239) 597-2900 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range, hitting multiple shots on the course is unacceptable.

Defending Champions

In 2015 the Women's Net Championship was hosted by the prestigious Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto. Elizabeth Breza, of Saint Augustine, who was five shots back from round one leader Byle, had a strong start by birdying her first hole of the day. Breza kept up this momentum throughout the rest of her round resulting in a net three-under-par 69 for her final round, two-under-par 142 total.

In the Forward Division, Charliene Lemon-Steiner knew that she needed to play strong around the Quarry course to catch up with round one co-leaders Koneda and Takacs. Keeping it consistent, her final round of net even-par 72 was enough to earn her the victory, posting a one-under-par 141 for the Championship.
