Parent-Child Champions Crowned

Jarrod and Steve Owen posted a pair of 66’s to win the Florida State Parent-Child Championship at the Walt Disney World Golf Resort in Orlando on July 29-30. This annual State Championship attracted more than 150 teams competing in a junior and regular division.  

Jarrod and Steve Owen, playing in the Mickey Championship Flight, won the overall Championship shooting a two-round total of 132. With just a one stroke lead heading into the final round, this father and son duo from Vero Beach matched their first round score to win the title by five strokes. The 2004 Champions Bret and Bryce Voisin, of Orlando, placed second recording a 67-70—137. First round leaders in the Donald Championship Flight, Eric Luzar, from Satellite Beach, and Rick Luzar, of Melbourne, went on to win the flight with a 145 two-round total. The pair recorded consistent scores of 72-73 to win by three. Diana and Scott Davis, of Pembroke Pines, shot two rounds of 74 to take second place in the flight. Chad and Charles Park, of Valrico, captured the Mickey First Flight as Erik Genrich, of Orlando, and Judy Barnes, of Palm Coast, won the Mickey Second Flight. In the Donald Division, Robby and Robert Meador, of Miami Lakes, claimed the first flight while Daniel LeClair, of Osteen, and Ron LeClair, of Orlando, won the second flight.

In the Junior Division, Ryan and Gregory Hicks, of Clearwater, stayed on top to win the 6-7 age division earning 22 points in the final round. Combined with 24 points in the first round, the pair had a total of 46 points to win by three. Bert and Jill Hinton, of Gainesville, won the 8-9 age division with 50 points. The Hinton’s had a one point advantage after the first round and then with 23 points in the final round edged out the field by two. In the 10-12 age division, Darian and Carl Ste-Marie, of Lake City, jumped into first place after claiming 31 points in the final round. With 27 in the first round, they finished with a total of 58 to win the division.

The Parent-Child Championship will once again return to the Walt Disney World Resort for a weekend full of family fun. Everyone over the age of 6 is welcome to play in the event in either the Junior or Regular division. The Regular division will play 18 holes of modified alternate shot each day while the Junior division will play 9 holes of modified alternate shot using Stableford scoring each day. The Parent-Child Championship is open to everyone. There is no maximum age limitation for parent or child. (A 40 year old is eligible to compete with his father).

The Regular division will play Disney's Palm and Magnolia courses. Both designed by Joe Lee, Disney's Palm and Magnolia plays host to the PGA Tour's FUNAI Classic. The Junior division will play the Oak Trail Course which is a 9-hole par 36 featuring shorter par 4's and par 3's.

ELIGIBILITY

One entrant of each team must be a member of the FSGA or FWSGA. There is no maximum age limitation for parent or child. Professionals can play but are not eligible for trophies or prizes in the regular division but are fully eligible in the junior division. Grandparents may also play with grandchildren.

ENTRY FEE

$290 for Regular Division ($280 for online entry) and $150 for Junior Division ($140 for online entry), which includes cart fees for tournament rounds, team picture, and awards. (Only two-person teams are permitted).

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

Regular division will play 18 holes of modified alternate shot each day. Teams will be grouped by combined handicap for day one groupings. Juniors play 9 holes of modified alternate shot using Stableford scoring each day.

FLIGHTS

Regular Division - the field will be divided between the Palm and Magnolia courses based upon combined handicaps of the teams.

After 18 holes, the field will be flighted (within course divisions).

There will not be any gender-based divisions, but four sets of tees will be utilized: Regular men, Regular women, Jr./Sr. men and Jr./Sr. women (Seniors age 55 and older will move up to play the same tee as the 13-14 year old juniors).

Junior Division: Teams will be flighted according to child's age in one of three age divisions (6-7, 8-9, 10-12). There will not be any gender-based divisions.

DIVISIONS

Junior (child is 6-12 years of age)

Regular (child is age 13 or older)

Must be age 6 or older as of July 30, 2006. A child 6-12 years of age can move up to regular division, but a child age 13 or older may not move down.

COURSES

Regular Division will play on Palm and Magnolia. The Junior Division will play the Oak Trail executive course.

CARTS

Players are responsible for practice round cart fees.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

Bob and David Curry were the overall champions shooting a 67-66-133 while Ken and Ryan Stevenson won the Eagle division shooting a 69-71--140. Tyler and Frank Strafaci finished with 51 points to win the 6-7 age division, Kyle and Steve Rintoul won the 8-9 age division with 47 points and Gary Buffington and Gary Buffington III took the 10-12 age division with 57 points.
