Mancheno and Kou Win in the Swamp
The Florida Junior Tour, Boys and Girls 13-15 age division, experienced an eventful weekend at Gainesville Country Club. Claire Albrecht made her first hole-in-one on the par three 13th hole, Cindy Kou won for the second time this year, and 2014 Tour Champion, Brandon Mancheno, claimed victory.
After round one, familiar names sat at the top of the leaderboard in the Boys’ division. In first place, Alberto Marinez led with a two under-par, 70. Martinez, of Weston, birdied holes 2, 4, and 14 and carded one bogey on hole 18 to claim first place. Close behind Martinez, Brandon Mancheno, of Jacksonville, birdied holes 8, 14, and 16 to finish in second place with a score of 71. Thomas Regan scored five birdies in the perfect weather conditions and completed round one with an even par score, in third place. Daniel Core captured fourth place with a score of 73.
Round two narrowed down to a battle between Martinez, Mancheno, and Core for first place. Martinez held onto his one shot lead through hole 14, but fell behind with a bogey on hole 15. Core, of Sorrento, finished hole 15 with a par while Mancheno scored a birdie and the lead. Brandon kept his one shot lead through the finishing holes and sealed his victory with a birdie on hole 18. Mancheno captured first place by two strokes and Martinez tied Core for second place with a
tournament total 147. Mancheno has been working his way up to a first place victory in 2015 after finishing third in his first FJT event at Southwood Golf Club and second at his second event at Brooksville Country Club.
Fresh off her inaugural win at Brooksville Country Club, Cindy Kou, in the Girls’ division, led the tournament after both rounds. Kou, of Windermere, shot a first round score of 72 highlighted by birdies on holes 4, 9, and 12. Ramya Meenakshisundaram, of Jacksonville, finished round one in second place, four shots behind Kou, with a score of 76. Ramya fired a second round 79 and finished Sunday in second place with a tournament total 155. Mimi Chen, of Longwood, and Nicole Polivchak, of Sarasota, tied for third place after a tournament total 156. Nicole’s second round score of 74 was the low round on Sunday. Cindy held onto first place after following up her round one even-par score with a score of 81. With this victory, Kou has won the first two 13-15 FJT events of 2015.
The FJT, 13-15 age division, travels to Ocala National Golf Club February 28 – March 1. The competition is gearing up for an exciting year of great golf courses and low scores.
