The Port Saint Lucie individual event concludes the 2015 Winter Series with three new champions, March 2-3. Two days before tournament play began, the Santa Lucia River Club experienced storms that drenched the golf course with eight inches of rain. Saturday’s storm challenged players with extremely wet course conditions, but that did not stop Baldonick Fernandez, Pete Williams, and Pat Vincelli from capturing first place.
Luckily, the storm only lasted one day and the players enjoyed two rounds in sunshine and warmth. In the 40-54 Age Division, Baldonick Fernandez Sr, of Pembroke Pines, posted two consistent rounds to capture first place. After shooting a round one score of 77, Fernandez sat tied for second place with Stevenson Clarke. Brian Mallonee, of Fort Pierce, finished round one in first place after a four over-par score of 76. With an even-par front nine, Fernandez played steadily to a 78 finish, 155 tournament total, and a two stroke victory over Mallonee.
Pete Williams, 2014 Senior Player of the Year, continued his stellar play by scoring two under-par rounds to be crowned champion of the 55-64 Age Division. Williams, of Juno Beach, lead after Monday’s round with a three under-par score of 69, four strokes ahead of Pete DeLongchamp in second place. Five birdies in his final round allowed Williams to hold onto first place and finish with a four under-par tournament total, 140. Jerry Rose and Robbie Dew fought hard in round two with under-par scores of 70 and 71 respectively. Sarasota native, Rose claimed second place, four strokes behind Williams. Following behind Rose in third place, Paul Melson posted bookend rounds of 74 for a tournament total 148.
In the 65 & Over Age Division, Pat Vincelli never left first place after a first round score of one under-par 71. Gary Johnson, of Chaska, Minnesota, held onto second place during both rounds with scores of 75-77, tournament total 152. Stuart native, Vincelli, was untouchable and captured first place by seven strokes after a second round of 74. Pat finished with a tournament total of one over-par and his first win of 2015.
Not only were three champions crowned on Tuesday, March 3, but the Winter Series Points Champions were determined as well. Baldonick Fernandez claimed two victories at the final winter series event by earning points list champion and an exemption into the Amateur Championship being held at Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. In the 55-64 age division, John Vaccaro finished on top of the points list and earned an exemption to the Mid-Amateur Championship at Sara Bay Country Club. Paul Nunez is now exempt from the Senior Amateur Championship, held at The Country Club of Naples due to his points list win.
The Winter Series events, which include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event, will return in 2016 for another successful season!
