Women's Florida Cup Matches

LAKE WALES, Fla. – For the first time in Women’s Florida Cup history, the North walks away victorious. North Florida raised the cup with a 20-12 victory on Tuesday at Mountain Lake.

It was the North’s first Women’s Florida Cup victory in the championship’s 12-year history.

Four-Ball Matches

The championship began on Monday morning with eight four-ball matches. The North team came out strong earning 5.5 points, while the South picked up 2.5 points.

Ashley Zagers and Lanlan Sun got the first point of the day for the North team with a 3-and-2 victory. Susie Keane and Carolyn Creekmore took their match to the 18th hole, with Keane rolling in a birdie putt to secure the 1-up win for the North. Therese Quinn and Liliana Ruiz-Munoz also added another point for the North, winning 1 up.

Brooke Raney and Meadow Southworth got the only win for the South in the morning, with a 3-and-1 win. The South's Meghan Stasi/Amy Kennedy and the North's Tama Caldabaugh/Lin Culver both won the 18th hole to tie their matches and win a point for their respective teams.

Foursomes Matches

Monday afternoon’s foursome matches saw a close session, with both teams coming away with four points. Zagers and Sun won their second match of the day, 4 and 3, and putting the North on the board first in the afternoon. Lauren Heinlein and Kelli Pry captured a commanding 7-and-6 win for the North

Meghan Stasi and Amy Kennedy won two of their last three holes to come back and earn 0.5 point for the South. Kim Keyer-Scott and Kathy Glennon added a point for the South with a big 7-and-6 victory, winning six-straight holes.

Cheryl Sadlon and Heidi Phillips took the last match of the day to the 18th hole, winning 1 up and adding a final point for the South. North headed into Tuesday’s final round with a 9.5-6.5 lead over the South, needing seven points to win their first Women’s Florida Cup.

Singles Matches

The North team came out strong in Tuesday’s Singles matches, with Christine Hunt, Liz Breza and Linda Chen all taking the first three matches all before the 17th hole. Keyer-Scott and Cheryl Sandlon earned two points for South, both winning 3-and-2, while Zagers continued her strong play with a 5-and-4 victory.

It was Tama Caldabaugh who clinched the victory for the North, birdieing the 18th to win 1 up. The North team picked up 10.5 points in the singles to take home the victory, while the North ended with 5.5.

Zagers and Breza were the only two players to capture three wins at Mountain Lake.

2023 Women's Florida Cup Matches

Eligibility

Invitation only for female amateur members of the FSGA. The FSGA selects two sixteen player teams to represent the North and the South of Florida in this biannual competition. Each team’s selections includes: 

  • (4) Senior players with the highest point totals from the Women's Senior Two-Year Player of the Year Points List
  • (4) Players with the highest point totals from the Women's Two-Year Amateur Player of the Year Points List
  • (2) Net players from the past two year's Women's Net Championship - The winner, or highest finishing player from the "Middle" division (i.e. The highest finishing player from the "North" and from the "South" will be selected for their team)
  • (2) Senior players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (2) Players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
  • (2) Net players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee and the Captains based upon participation and performance over the prior years

In the event that a selected player is not a member of the FSGA, they must become one to meet eligibility requirements. Any designated selections which are not filled due to ineligibility or other reason will be selected by the FSGA Championships Committee.

$300 - Double Occupancy
$400 - Single Occupancy

 Format

  • Ryder Cup style format between the North Team and the South Team
  • Each match is worth one point to the team total
  • First team to 16 1/2 points wins the Cup for two years
  • A 16-16 tie results in the defending champions retaining the Cup for an additional two years.

Approximate Yardages

  • Non-Senior Players - 5,800 yards approx. (Gross Only)
  • Senior Players - 5,400 yards approx. (Gross Only)
  • Net Players - 5,000 yards approx. (Net Only)

Handicaps

  • Net Players Only - All valid Florida GHIN Handicap Indexes used will be from 7 days prior to the championship start date.

Schedule of Events

Sunday, October 22nd

  • Afternoon practice rounds starting at 12:00 PM
  • Welcome Reception at the Clubhouse

Monday, October 23rd

  • 8:00 - 8:30 AM - Four-Ball matches off #1 and #10
  • 1:00 PM - Foursome matches off #1 and #10
  • Pairings Dinner at the Clubhouse

Tuesday, October 24th

  • 8:00 - 9:30 AM - Singles matches off #1
  • Awards Ceremony and lunch

Teams

16 members per team. Teams will be finalized in the days following the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.

Each team consists of 6 amateurs, 6 senior golfers (no handicaps) and 4 net players. All players must be of age 21 and over as of October 23, 2023.

Conditions/Schedules

The FSGA Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee reserves the right to alter any of the conditions, provisions and/or schedules. The decision of the Championships Committee/on-site Rules Committee in any matter will be final.

Defending Champions 

For the fith-straight time, it was the South who raised the Women’s Florida Cup on Tuesday. South Florida was victorious during the two-day championship, retaining the cup with a 18.5-13.5 win at Quail West Golf & Country Club. For a look at the 2021 results, click here.
