Figus and Kim Weather the Storm
This weekend’s Florida Junior Tour event at Timacuan Golf and Country Club was full of excitement and great golf. Two consistent players were able to play through the windy weather and claim their first victories on the Florida Junior Tour. Port Saint Lucie’s, Amadeo Figus, and Winter Garden’s, Annie Kim, proved to be unfazed by Sunday’s brief suspension of play and they both finished under par for the event.
Amadeo Figus, the boy’s champion, fought off stiff competition all weekend in his come from behind victory. Figus trailed first round leaders, Tyler Wilkes and Justin Ortiguera, by two shots after they both fired impressive two under par 70’s in the opening round on Saturday. Sunday, however, was a different story for both Justin and Tyler, as difficult hole locations and high winds led to multiple bogeys in their first nine holes of play. Figus was quiet, but quick to jump on this opportunity. He was able to recover from an opening bogey at the first, and make back to back birdies on holes four and five. Amadeo never looked back after those two birdies, posting an impressive 35 on the back nine, for a final round total of two under-par 70. His tournament total of two under-par, 142, was enough to give him a five shot victory over first round leader, Justin Ortiguera. Behind Justin, were four players tied for third place at four over-par for the event.
Similar to Figus, Annie Kim was able to come from behind to claim her first FJT victory. Annie was stellar in both rounds this weekend, shooting an opening round 72 on Saturday to put her two strokes behind Ramya Meenakshisundaram. Ramya and Boca Raton’s, Dana Williams, fought extremely hard in both rounds to challenge Kim. Williams, whom shot an opening round 75, unfortunately made two late double bogeys and finished at six over-par for the event, seven shots behind Annie Kim. Annie and Ramya came to their 18th hole, the par four ninth hole, tied at one under-par for the tournament. Annie was able to make her par on the final hole and Ramya’s par putt to tie unfortunately lipped out, leading to Annie’s one stroke victory.
A big thank you goes out to Timacuan Golf and Country Club for being a great host site for this weekend’s FJT tournament. The FJT 13-15 age division’s next event will be at Wyndemere Country Club on May 16th and 17th. Next weekend the 16-18 division will take on a great test at Old Corkscrew in Estero. Best of luck to all the competitors in the coming weeks!
