Albright & Gosse Capture North Championship
The Florida State Mid-Amateur Four-Ball North Championship was won by Steve Albright and Kelly Gosse at LPGA International.
Albright, of Ocala, and Gosse, of Inverness, finished with a 131 total over two days (66-65), but Winter Park's Randy Elliott and Jacksonville's Wes Paxson Jr. matched them shot for shot to also post a 66-65-131. Albright ended things in a hurry though with a birdie on the first playoff hole to clinch the title. Tampa's Doug LaCrosse and Joe Alfieri, who had claimed the previous four four-ball events they had competed, shot a 1-round 68 to go from first place to a three-way tie for third. Phil Etch (Altamonte Springs) and James Byrd Jr. (Longwood) shot 67-65, while the Winter Park tandem of Jack Richey and David Boesel posted back-to-back 66's. Valrico's Bill Moore and Phil Johnson, who was in second place after the first round, shot 68 to finish in sixth place.
The Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Championships were for amateur golfers over the age of 25. The competitions used four-ball stroke play format. In four-ball stroke play, two competitors play as partners with each playing their own ball. The lower score of the partners was the score for the hole.
The championships are the third and fourth of 17 state championships conducted annually by the Florida State Golf Association. The FSGA was formed in 1913 to preserve, promote, and protect amateur golf in the state.
