Crandon Park Golf Course in Key Biscayne served as a challenging test of golf for the juniors in the 16-18 division FJT event on September 19-20. Focusing on course management to combat the tight golf course, Sachin Kumar and Emma Bradley fought off the field to win.
The boys' division finished round one with only two players under-par. Chase Cutshall, of West Melbourne, shot an impressive three-under par, 69, to steal first place. One stroke behind was Sachin Kumar, of Laurel Spring, with a two-under par, 70. Sachin, who is the 2014 (13-15) Boys' Junior Match Play Champion, recently turned 16 to move to the older age division. Colin Kresl stood alone at third with a score of one-over 73 and was followed by Jake Moscoso and Kritsarin Oukosavanna tied for fourth place with a 74. Anything is possible on the shot-makers golf course heading into round two with eleven players shooting 75 or better.
Cradon Park Golf Course dried out for round two due to a day of sunshine and warm temperatures on Saturday. Sachin Kumar fought from second place and prevailed to win his first FJT event of 2015. It was an exciting final round with Kumar and Cutshall heading into the final nine holes tied. Chase fired a front-nine 34 but struggled through the back-nine finishing with a 39, 73 total. Kumar stayed steady and carded four birdies on the front-nine to fire a 33-38—71. Tomas Nieves, Spencer Alexander and Kritsarin Oukosavanna tied for third place with a tournament total 148.
Alexa Rivas and Emma Bradley tied for first place with a four-over, 76, after Saturday's round. The girls' 16-18 division finished round one with just six girls shooting in the 70’s. Amanda Leslie was in third place, one-stroke back with a 77, and Emily Black followed close behind in fourth place with a 78. While some girls found more trouble in round two, Emma Bradley, of Naples, crept up the leaderboard shooting the low round of the tournament, four-under par, 68. She posted the only red number in the girls division during the event and captured the win by ten strokes. Cape Coral resident, Brittany Shin stayed consistent in round two, improving from her first round 79 with a 76 to finish in third place. Emily Black, of Naples, also played better during the second day with rounds of 78-76—154 and a second place finish.
The juniors have been learning to play through inclement weather and wet course conditions during the 2015-2016 FJT season. The 13-15 division travels to Port Saint Lucie for the PGA Golf Club tournament September 26-27 while the 16-18 division heads to Naples to conquer The Country Club of Naples, October 3-4.
