Bear Lakes Country Club - West Palm Beach

August 19-21, 2011

Weeks Wins Mid-Senior

Michael Weeks prevailed in a playoff to win the Florida State Mid-Senior Championship at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach. The Championship was held from August 19-21.

Michael Weeks, of Jupiter, recorded a final round one-under par 71 for a tournament total of four-under par 212 to find himself tied with the Defending Champion Bobby Bird, of Vero Beach and John Wegmann, of Southwest Ranches after 54-holes of play. Weeks fired a first round of four-under par 68 and followed that up with a second round of one-over par 73.  Bird posted rounds of 70-75-67 as Wegmann posted rounds of 72-70-70.  The trio would head for a sudden death playoff to determine the Champion. The sudden-death playoff would go two holes with Weeks making a 3-foot birdie on the 18th hole for the victory.  This is Weeks first State Championship.  Stephen Anderson, of Hobe Sound, finished one stroke back with a tournament total of three-under par 213 to take home fourth place honors.

To be eligible for the Mid-Senior Championship, players must be 40 years of age or older. The Championship consists of 54 holes of stroke play cut to the low 70 plus ties after 36 holes. The first two rounds were played on the Lakes course and the Links Course with 70 players advancing with a two-round total of 158 and better to the final round on the Lakes Course.

Entries Close Wednesday, August 3, 2011

The Links course offers multiple deep bunkers on each hole which cause it to resemble the beauty of a seaside Scottish Links course.  From the five sets of tees and through the rolling fairways and expanded greens, this course layout winds itself through clusters of native grasses and plantings. The Links course depicts a character all of its own. The Lakes course, a 7,439 yard Par 72, originally designed in 1984 and renovated in 2003 by legendary Jack Nicklaus, offers strategically placed bunkers, undulating greens, shimmering lakes, and five sets of tees to accommodate all caliber of players. Bear Lakes hosted the 1995, 2001, and 2009 PGA Tour Qualifying School where such players as Boo Weekly, Rickie Fowler, and Troy Merritt have earned their cards.
