Florida Wins Southeastern Challenge

Team Florida combined to earn 14 1/2 points in the Sunday morning three-ball matches, for a team total of 25 points to win the Southeastern Challenge MatchesGeorgia added 13 points to their day one total to finish with 22 1/2 points as Alabama secured 15 1/2 points. The Southeastern Challenge Matches were conducted at the Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, October 16-17.

Team Florida’s Stephen Anderson, from Hobe Sound, and RJ Nakashian, from Palm Beach Gardens, remained perfect winning both of their individual matches Sunday morning, earning a total of seven points between the duo. Doug Snoap, from Apopka, picked up two points for Florida with a 1 up victory over Alabama and a 5 & 4 victory over his Georgia opponent. Bobby Bird, from Vero Beach, also picked up two points with a 3 & 2 victory over Alabama, and a 1 up victory over Georgia. Rick Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, Kelly Gosse, of Ocala, Don Bell, of Port Orange, Tim Hume, of Tampa, Pete Williams, of Juno Beach, and Jon Veneziano, from Eustis, all picked up one point with crucial victories over their opponents. Florida’s victory breaks Georgia’s five year match winning streak, and evens up the all time series with Georgia, with six victories apiece.

The Southeastern Challenge Matches are a biennial Ryder Cup style match play competition pitting twelve man amateur teams, eight Mid-Amateurs and four Seniors, from Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The Matches consist of four-ball, foursome and individual matches over two days, with one point awarded to the winning team for each match. One-half point is awarded to each side for halved matches.

The 2010 Southeastern Challenge Matches will be held at Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, FL. 

The FSGA selects a twelve player team to represent Florida in this biennial competition against Alabama and Georgia consisting of one player 21 years and older, seven Mid-Amateurs (25 and older), two players 50 years of age and older and two Senior Amateurs (55 and older). The team selections will include:  

  • (1) Senior players with the highest point totals from the "Two Year Points List"

  • (1) Senior players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee (5) Mid-Amateur players with the highest point totals from the "Two Year Points List"

  • (2) Players 50 years and older selected by the FSGA Championship Committee

  • (3) Mid-Amateur players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee

ELIGIBILITY:  Invitational.

2010 HOST: Florida

CHAMPIONSHIP:  Ryder Cup format - Saturday AM is Four-Ball match play followed by PM Foursomes (alternate shot) match play. Sunday morning is Three-ball match play.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS:  In 2008, Georgia won with 26 1/2 points while Alabama earned 21 1/2 points and Florida gained 15 points at Kiva Dunes in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
