Women's Southeastern Challenge Match

EATONTON, Ga. - Florida captured 17 ½ points in the final-round of three-ball matches to take the lead and win the Women's Southeastern Challenge Match with 29 total points to Georgia's 20 ½, and Alabama's 13 ½. The second biennial event took place at Reynolds Plantation-Great Waters, Monday, August 11- to Tuesday, August 12.

The first round of matches began Monday morning in the form of a four-ball format, also commonly known as best-ball. Florida captured 2 1/2 out of the possible 6 points, leaving the team tied with Alabama and trailing Georgia by 1 1/2 points. The afternoon matches, consisting of foursomes, proved to be a moving opportunity for Florida, earning 9 of the 12 available points. Victories in these 6 team matches gave Florida the outright lead, finishing the first day with 11 1/2 points, 3 over Georgia and 4 1/2 over Alabama.

The ladies of Florida performed even better in their final individual matches, passing their competition by a landslide. Of the possible 24 points that Florida could have taken, they won 17 1/2 and more than half of the team defeated their opponents before the difficult par 5 18th.

Team Florida was captained by Director of Women's Golf, Meghan Martinek, and Tournament Manager, Jenna Masnyk.  The twelve lady squad consists of eight amateurs and four senior amateur selections. Team Florida was: Tara Connelly of Palm Beach Gardens, Charlotte Daughan of Orlando, Lauren Lamm of Lakewood Ranch, Sarah Matin of Winter Garden, Katie Mitchell of Atlantic Beach, Emily Rymer of Orlando, Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, and Mallory Viera of Howey-in-the-Hills.  The four senior selections on the team are Mary Jane Hiestand of Naples, Gigi Higgins of Cape Coral, Lin McMillan of Palm Coast, and Therese Quinn of Jacksonville.

Lin McMillian, who also participated in the 2012 Inaugural Southeastern Challenge Matches, led the way in the Senior Division capturing all 5 possible points, remaining undefeated in Southeastern Challenge Match history.  Therese Quinn also captured all 5 points sweeping her opponents. Four-time U.S Women's Mid-Am Champion, Meghan Stasi collected 3 points, going 2-2-1 in her matches with Tara Connelly and as well as individually.

The third biennial Southeastern Challenge Match will be hosted in 2016 by Alabama. Florida is set to host the fourth biennial event in 2018.

Great Waters Course

Georgia will be host to the 2014 Women's Southeastern Challenge Matches between Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.  The matches will be conducted at Reynolds Plantation on the Great Waters course in Greensboro, GA.  For a look at the 2012 Championship Results click here.

Invitation only.

Championship Format

• First day: Two matches consisting of morning four-ball matches and afternoon foursome (alternate shot) matches.
  
• Second day: 12 total single matches, with a player from each association in each match competing against one another (three-ball match).

Teams

The FSGA selects a twelve (12) player team to represent Florida in this competition against Georgia and Alabama consisting of four (4) Women Senior Amateurs (50 and older) and eight (8) other women of which no more than two (2) junior players of age 17 and under. The team selections includes:

• (2) Women Senior players with the highest point totals from the Women's Senior Two Year Points List
• (2) Women Senior player selected by the FSGA Championship Committee
• (3) Women players with the highest point totals from the Women Two Year Points List
• (5) Women players selected by the FSGA Championship Committee

Players will be chosen and invited by the Championship Committee with selection criteria to include, but not be limited to, the FSGA Women's Two-Year points list standings as of July 14, 2014 after the FSGA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship.
