How to Utilize Social Media During the Recruiting Process

Social media plays an important role in the recruiting process and beyond. Platforms such as Instagram and TikTock are fabulous ways to highlight your golf game and who you are as a person outside of golf. Most teams and athletic departments also have accounts on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook, which presents recruits with the opportunity to get a behind the scenes glimpse into a potential program that you are interested in joining. Social media also provides an additional form of communication and an effective way to connect with coaches and their teams.

With all of the positives of social media there are some pitfalls to be aware of since coaches will do a thorough search of all of your accounts to see if you will be a good fit for their program and represent their team with dignity and class. Once you are a member of the team, the coaching staff and athletic department will continue to monitor what you post in an effort to ensure you are behaving in a way that will not cause harm to yourself or reflect poorly on the program.

A helpful conversation to have with a coach during the recruiting process is to ask what their team policies are in regard to social media.  Their answers will give you a better understanding of what a coach is looking for in a student-athlete and it will help you know what to expect if you do join their program.
