Florida Junior Tour Participants,
As we look forward to this weekends Florida Junior Tour event at Juliette
Falls, please recognize that Florida has just experienced one of its worst
winters on record. The area around Juliette Falls was hit particularly hard.
Even recently, night time temperatures have remained in the 40s and 50s and
daytime highs have just begun to reach into the lower 80s. The extended cold
temperatures during the height of the winter pushed the Bermuda grass into full
dormancy and the late spring has delayed recovery.
As a result, some of the greens at Juliette Falls are in less than perfect
condition. The Bermuda grass is just beginning to emerge from dormancy. Juliette
Falls did not overseed last fall and the hard winter shows through. One green in
particular, #8, has been hit particularly hard and the course has had to
implement the use of a temporary green. However, after extensive tree and brush
clearing allowing for more air and sun as well as aerification the original
green will be in play this weekend.
Our staff has been following the conditions at Juliette Falls and many other
courses around the state throughout the winter. Each year, we hold our breath
hoping that courses that host our competitions will make it through the winter
and through the transition from winter overseed in good condition. In this case,
the difficult winter, the delayed spring and the lack of overseed combined to
produce the conditions that we face.
Please know that the staff at Juliette Falls continues to do everything possible
to improve the green surfaces. The tournament staff will also adjust course
set-up to minimize the impact of the conditions. We will conduct a first-rate
event and we are confident that we will identify two very fine players as
our Champions.
We appreciate your understanding of this challenging situation and thank you for
your support of our organization.
Sincerely,
Jim Demick, Executive Director
Darin Green, FJT Tournament Director
