Tale of Two Divisions at Two-Man Scramble
Howey-in-the-Hills, FLA. – Mission Resort + Club proved to be a championship test for the Two-Man Scramble, leading to two teams of great champions after 36 holes of play. After playing on both golf courses at Mission R + C, players were not able to get comfortable on one course. On the final day, El Campeon showed its teeth with scores averaging over two strokes higher.
Championship Division
Round one turned out to be the Ashton Nix & Austin Raines show, with the team being the only one in the Championship Division firing the elusive 59. A bogey-free round highlighted by 10 birdies and an eagle was enough to give them the one stroke lead over Weston Parrish & Justin Grant. However, with 12 teams within three shots of the lead, anything could happen with 18 holes left to play.
The final round was a true battle within a handful of teams that were all able to share the lead at one point. With the team of Latowski/Donegan and Hernandez/Valenty both in the clubhouse at 18-under par, Justin Grant & Weston Parrish faced the difficult 18th hole, needing a par to send the three teams into a playoff. Watching from the clubhouse, the two teams in witnessed the team of Parrish/Grant drain a 10-footer to win the Two-Man Scramble.
Senior Division
The team of Bobby Bird and William Mallon were able to take advantage of Mallon’s distance off the tee to light up the Las Colinas course firing a first round 59. This was enough to take a whopping four stroke lead over Walter Himelsbaugh and Terry Hinkle. Chasing the two teams at the top were three teams sitting five shots back.
After building up an almost insurmountable lead, Bird & Mallon were able to continue their great play to build the win up to six strokes by the end of the championship. This win for the two gave them the first back-to-back win in the Senior Division of the Two-Man Scramble’s history. This win also gave Mallon the ability to jump up to 4th in the Senior Player of the Year points rankings.
