John Jonas (a), of Jacksonville, leads the field after 36-holes with a two round total of 131 (-13). Jonas was able to overcome three bogeys on his back nine by eagling the par five fourth hole and birdying holes three, six, and eight. Jonas will have his work cut out for him in round three as three players trail by four shots. Among these players is 2008 Amateur Player of the Year, David Johnson, Jason Cook, and amateur player Ryan Carter. Joey Petronio sits in fifth place alone after two rounds of 68. Joe Alfieri and TJ Shuart both shot the low round of the day, 66, to come back from mediocre first rounds.
Sixty-five players at one-over par or better made the cut to advance to the final round of play Sunday. There are 23 amateurs playing in the final round. Defending champion, Caleb Johnson, is currently tied with this year’s Amateur Champion, Jimmy Jones at three-under par, 141. Jacob Huizinga, 2015 Four-Ball Champion, made the cut after a second round 69.
Started in 1942, The Florida Open Championship has produced past champions that include Willie Turnesa, Bob Murphy, Gary Koch, Bruce Fleisher, John Huston, Dudley Hart, and Bart Bryant. This is the sixth year the Florida State Golf Association will be conducting this great championship.
