Former Florida Junior Tour Player, John Jonas (a), of Jacksonville, leads the field of 144 players by three strokes heading into the second round of play. Jonas, who is a member of Timuquana Country Club, fired nine birdies and nine pars to propel him to the top. As an amateur, he plays college golf for the College of Charleston in South Carolina. Jonas started his round strong with four straight birdies and finished the front nine with birdies on holes six and eight. Never faltering once, Jonas finished his bogey free round with three birdies on the back nine. Four players, Jake Kevorkian, JC Deacon, Ryan Carter, and Zachary Oakley, finished tied for second place at six-under par 66. Three players are tied for sixth place, four shots back, including: Keith Greene, Tommy Gibson, and David Johnson. Other than Jonas, twelve amateurs are currently in the top 25. The second round will begin on Saturday morning at 7:15 AM.
The top 144 amateur and professional golfers in the state will play 36 holes at Timuquana CC on Friday, July 17th and Saturday, July 18th. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 and ties. The final 18 holes will be played on Sunday, July 19th. Prior to reaching the Championship, over 1,000 participants attempted to qualify at one of 16 sites across the state.
Started in 1942, The Florida Open Championship has produced past champions that include Willie Turnesa, Bob Murphy, Gary Koch, Bruce Fleisher, John Huston, Dudley Hart, and Bart Bryant. This is the sixth year the Florida State Golf Association will be conducting this great championship.
