Kevin Phelan, the 3rd seed, is the highest seed remaining of the four players advancing to the semifinals of the Florida State Amateur Match Play Championship at Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero.
Kevin Phelan, from Saint Augustine, earned the 3rd seed after posting a 1-under par 71 in the seeding round. In the lower half of the bracket, Phelan won his first match 4 and 2 and then won his next match 3 and 1. In the Round of 16, Phelan defeated Thad Hudgens, from Longwood, 1 up and reserved his spot in the semis after beating the 2009 Florida Open Champion Thomas Murray, from Orange Park, 3 and 2 in the quarters. Phelan will face Ryan Black, of Port Saint Lucie, in the semifinals. Black, who recently qualified for the United States Amateur, beat Amit Odaiyar, of Ocala, 2 and 1 in the quarters. In Black’s Saturday morning match, he defeated John Wegmann, from Southwest Ranches, 5 and 3. In the upper half of the bracket, Kevin Aylwin, from New Smyrna Beach, will play Guillermo Pumarol, from Miami, in the semifinal match. Aylwin, a two-time State Public Links Champion, topped Justin Dorward, from Port Saint Lucie, in 19 holes in the quarters. Pumarol defeated the 2009 Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Champion Tim Hume, from Tampa, 3 and 1 in the quarterfinals for his place in the semis.
