Anthony Gomez, 18, of Palm Bay, fired the low round of the day to take the lead by two strokes after over an hour weather delay. Playing at 7,033 yards, four competitors posted a 2-under par 70 including last year’s Public Links Champion Robert Parker, of Sanford. Brett Burton, of Stuart, the 2004 Match Play runner-up, also shot a 70 as did Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora, and Brandon Smith, from Lake Worth. Three players are at 71 while Andy Purnell, of Jacksonville, who won the Four-Ball Championship last week with partner Steve Carter, is tied for ninth place with two competitors at even par. The Championship continues tomorrow, Sunday, July 24, with tee-times beginning at 7:30 am.
The Public Links Championship is open to bona fide public course players who are not members of a private club and also do not have a handicap index no higher than 8.4. Competitors play 18 holes of stroke play on the first day and then, the field is flighted and competitors play another 18 holes of stroke play on the final day.
