Alexander posted a four under-par, 68, to start round two of the 54th Senior Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Naples in first place. Second round tee-times begin at 8:00 am on Wednesday, April 15th with the final round on Thursday, April 16th.
After the first round of play that saw 142 of the best senior amateur golfers in the state compete at The Country Club of Naples, two shots separated first from second place. Buddy Alexander, of Gainesville, stood at the top of the leaderboard due to an impressive five birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole. Rokki Rogan, of Fort Myers, Peter Wegmann, of Fort Lauderdale, and Gordon Marshall, of Sarasota, are currently tied for second place after their rounds of two under-par 70. With only four scores under-par, the leader board sets up for an exciting finish. Pete Williams, 2014 Senior Amateur Champion and Senior Player of the Year, sits tied for 13th after a first round score of 74. Alexander enters Wednesday's round with previous championship experience including a victory at the 1986 U.S. Amateur and 1991 State Amateur Championships.
Since the number of entries received has always surpassed the capacity of the Championship, a qualifying stage was instituted in 2005. While 50 players earned exempt status through a variety of different means, just about 300 participants attempted to qualify at one of six sites across the state, as competitors played 18 holes of stroke play hoping to advance to the Championship. Participants must be 55 or older to participate in the Championship. Players who advanced to the Championship compete in 54-holes of stroke play with a cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes.
