DADE CITY, Fla. – The first round brought back memories of the Florida heat, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees. Following a stretch of cooler weather, the heat became the first challenge, particularly for those in the afternoon wave. Despite the stuffy conditions, the players in the Super-Senior Amateur Championship still managed to put together some solid rounds of golf.
What Happened?
David Tassell held the clubhouse lead at the end of the first wave, posting a 2-under 70. Despite a bogey on his opening hole, he recovered carding three consecutive birdies on the 11th, 12th, and 13th holes. As the first wave wrapped up, the closest competitors to Tassell were three players tied at even par, 72.
The second wave began at 12:30 PM, featuring defending champion David Anthony. As the round progressed, Bob Mathers began to challenge Tassell’s lead, picking up two birdies on the 11th and 13th holes to move to 3-under with five holes to play. Like Tassell, Mathers bounced back from a tough start, having posted a double bogey on the second hole. Also in contention was 2023 Super-Senior Amateur Champion Tom Norton. After making the turn at 1-under, Norton bogeyed the 12th hole to drop back to even par. But the former champion wasn’t done yet. He surged ahead with birdies on the 14th, 16th, and 17th holes, joining Norton at the top of the leaderboard heading into moving day.
At the conclusion of round one, Tassell and Norton were tied for first, both shooting 3-under 69. Tassell was in second place with a 2-under 70, and rounding out the top three was Bobby Lundquist, who posted a 1-under 71.
