What Happened?
Bringing together some of the best amateur golfers in the state is a recipe for exceptional play, and today’s four-ball matches did not disappoint. The action stayed tight through the front nine, but the first team to close out their match was R J Nakashian and Pete Williams (South), who defeated Mike Finster and Brian Keenan (North) with a commanding 5 & 2 victory. Florida Amateur Champions, Jimmy Ellis and Matthew Galloway (North), were unable to overcome T J Shuart and Richard Donegan (South), finishing 3 & 2. By the end of the four-ball matches, the South team emerged with a slim lead, scoring 4.5 points to the North’s 3.5.
As the day warmed up, so did the competition. Jake Sherwin, the 2024 Mid-Amateur Champion, and Jonah Wasserstrom (South), triumphed over the formidable duo of Ty Capps and Tyler Gulliksen (North) with a decisive 4 & 2 victory, despite Capps and Gulliksen’s earlier dominance in four-ball. On the other hand, Hall of Fame inductee Joe Alfieri and three-time Forty & Over Four-Ball Champion, Daniel DeBra, (North) showcased their prowess, defeating Scott Turner and Will Davenport (South) 1-up without ever trailing in the match. In a thrilling finish, Mike Smith and Rhett Pooley (North) edged out Abbie Valentine and Marc France (South), securing their win on the 18th hole.
