Strickland Emerges as Second Round Leader

August 24, 2024

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The second round saw a dynamic leaderboard as Seth Strickland took the lead by one stroke over the field. Morning play started after a thirty-minute delay due to course conditions from a heavy rain. The afternoon wave followed suit, starting with a thirty-minute delay.

What Happened

In the morning, Charles Campbell climbed the leaderboard 12 places into tied for fourth and only two shots behind the first round leader, Keenan. Campbell fired a two-under-par, 70. The Sarasota native posted three birdies on the front nine to make the turn at three-under-par, yet a lone bogey on the back nine brought him back to two-under-par for the day. Campbell described his rounds, “Yesterday I just had a couple of bad swings and today I avoided that. I was very consistent off the tee, my wedges were really good, I was getting them in play and it gave me a lot of good looks.” In addition, William Dukes saw the same movement up the leaderboard after he fired a three-under-par, 69 to finish only two shots off the leader.

Will Peterson played two consistent rounds with a 71 each day to share second place with Dukes. Although Peterson saw the same score for each round, he describes the two days a completely different. “Yesterday was a bunch of birdies and a bunch of penalties, and it worked out to a really nice round. Today was just tons of pars, two birdies, one bogey, really consistent and just hit a lot of greens and I have been putting really well.” Sitting a two-under-par after 36-holes, Peterson sits one stroke off the lead.

Yet, it was Seth Strickland in the afternoon wave that took control and emerged as the second round leader. Strickland fired a 71 for a 36-hole total of three-under-par and hold the lead by one stroke over the field. The Miami Shore native started off hot with two consecutive birdies and then remained consistent with pars before another birdies came on the 17th hole. Strickland said, “I started birdie, birdie, and then almost birdied the third; so it was a dream start. I played a really nice round all day.” Strickland also stated that it felt really good to have the lead heading into the final round, “This is the first time I have led an FSGA event, so tomorrow is going to be super exciting and I can’t wait for it.”

Abbie Valentine also shares second place with Dukes and Peterson at two-under-par.
