Coultoff and Mason Share the Lead at Boys Junior

July 6, 2024

Ocala, Fla. – The 70th Boys’ Junior Championship kicked off today at Club Adena and Glenview Country Club. Due to Adena's challenging layout and unique terrain, even the top junior golfers in the state found themselves tested. Club Adena will serve as the host course where players who make the cut will compete on Sunday to determine our Boys’ Junior Champion.

What Happened?

Dylan Mason and Shawn Coultoff, who started off at Glenview, are tied for first at the end of round one, both carding 7-under 65’s. Coultoff saw a bogey-free round with three birdies on the front nine, and four on the back nine. Mason had eight birdies, but saw a bogey on the 18th hole. The players at Club Adena were challenged today, as the course prompts intelligent planning from almost every tee. Palmer Haynes and Nolan DeForest lead the way at Club Adena shooting 66 (-4). Haynes started strong with an opening birdie and added four consecutive birdies on holes 13 through 16. DeForest would finish his day out with six birdies and two bogeys.

There are four players tied for third place. All starting their Championship rounds at Glenview, Jessy Huebner, Sohan Patel, Luke Splane, and Jaspreet Kondal all 6-under 66’s. Meanwhile, Jessy Huebner, Sohan Patel, and Jaspreet Kondal all sit atop the (13-15) leaderboard and only one shot behind after opening round 66's.

It is no secret that Glenview proved itself to be the easier of the two courses, allowing for 38 players to go under-par compared to only 15 players going under-par on Adena.

What’s Next?

All players play 18 holes on each course (Adena and Glenview) on Saturday, July 6th, and Sunday, July 7th. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 70 overall players & ties.

The final 18 holes will be played on Monday, July 8th at Club Adena. The lowest score for 54 holes will be the Champion.

Quotable

“I played well, just kind of played my game. I came into this playing pretty well, so that felt nice to know that I can shoot a good number if I can keep everything in check. Wedges were really good today, hit a lot of close shots, and made the putts. I wasn’t giving myself a hard day today.” – Dylan Mason on his First Round 65

“I keep my stats on my pin sheet, like where all my shots go, but I’m writing down so many numbers there, that I forgot where I was and I don’t look at the leaderboard, or I try not to.” -- Shawn Coultoff on how he keeps his focus during his rounds

“I’d say the course (Glenview) is playing pretty easy, the pins are gettable. I started out hitting the ball really well. The putter was ice cold, and then on nine I started getting things going with the wedges, probably hit a couple inside five feet on ten and nine, and then just played solid golf on the par 5’s on the way in.” – Parker Severs on his 5-under 67
