Gordon Marshall will take a one shot lead into the final round of play of the 52nd Senior Amateur Championship at Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach. The final round will begin at 8:00 am on Wednesday, April 18th.
Gordon Marshall, of Sarasota, (pictured right) currently holds a one stroke lead at five-under par 139 after 36-holes of play. After posting a first round of two-under par 70, Marshall would hold a share of the lead with five other players entering the second round. Marshall had a hot putter on Wednesday making eight birdies to go along with three bogeys and a double bogey on the par 4 thirteenth hole, for his round of three-under par 69. Marshall is seeking to capture his first Senior Amateur title and will have to hold off some big names lurking close behind. Doug LaCrosse, of Tampa, currently stands alone in second place after rounds of 72-68 to stand at four-under par. Howard Logan, of Naples, and the 2007 Champion, Rick Woulfe, of Fort Lauderdale, are tied for third place with a two round total of three-under par 141. Sixty players advanced to play the final round posting 154 or better.
Since the number of entries received has always surpassed the capacity of the Championship, a qualifying stage was instituted in 2005. While 51 players earned exempt status through a variety of different means, more than 300 participants attempted to qualify at one of seven sites across the state, as competitors played 18 holes of stroke play hoping to advance to the Championship. Participants must be 55 or older to participate in the Championship. Players who advanced to the Championship compete in 54-holes of stroke play with a cut to the low 60 and ties after 36 holes.
