Happy New Year! As January 2023 begins, so do changes to the Rules of Golf. As you probably remember, the USGA and R&A did a massive modernization to the Rules of Golf that went into effect in 2019. The USGA and R&A release updates to the Rules every four years and the changes go into effect on January 1, 2023. Below are the key changes that players might encounter.
Dropping Back-On-The-Line
When using the “back-on-the-line” relief option when dropping from a penalty area, or when taking unplayable ball relief, the ball must be dropped on the line (not within a club-length). Once dropped, the ball may roll up to one club-length in any direction (even closer to the hole).
Replacing Damaged Clubs
If your club is damaged during a round, except in cases of abuse, you may replace it, repair it, or continue to use it. “Damaged,” means everything from a scratch on the face of the club from a rock to a club broken in half.
Not Responsible for Handicap on Scorecard (Stroke Play Only)
You are not required to put your handicap on your scorecard in a handicap stroke play compeitition; it is now the Committee’s responsibility.
Ball Moved by Natural Forces after a Drop or Place
When your ball is at rest after taking relief (penalty area, unplayable ball, ground under repair, etc.) and the ball then rolls into another area of the course due to natural forces, there is no penalty, and you must replace it.
For instance, you drop a ball within two club-lengths from where you last entered a red penalty area. The dropped ball comes to rest. While preparing for the next stroke, natural forces (wind, water or gravity) causes your ball to roll back into the red penalty area. For no additional penalty, you must replace the ball on the spot where it came to rest after the drop.
Rule 25 – Modifications for Players with Disabilities
A new Rule was added for 2023! Modifications to the Rules of Golf were made for golfers that are blind, amputees, use assistive mobility devices, and with intellectual disabilities.
