Mayacoo Lakes Country Club, located in West Palm Beach, hosted 139 top senior competitors vying to be crowned Champion of the 57th Senior Amateur Championship. Two rounds of stroke play determined the top 67 players who scored 158 (+16) or better to advance to the final round on Thursday. The players experienced a three hour rain delay in the afternoon wave of tee times during round one. Due to inclement weather the competitors were forced to complete round one first thing Wednesday morning before continuing to play their second round.
The weather cooperated with sunny skies and breezy conditions for round two. Bill Barnes, of Bonita Springs, carded steady rounds of 71-69 to take the lead by five strokes heading into the final round. Barnes was the only player in the red, at 140 two under-par, after two rounds. He will be searching for his first FSGA Championship win in the final round. David Anthony trails behind in second place at three over-par with rounds of 77-68—145. Four players tied for third place at 147 (+5) including Mark Weston, Michael Mercier, Walter Gieselman, and Don Whittemore. Defending Champion, George DeSear will be playing in the final round along with other past Champions, Peter Wegmann, Gordon Marshall, Pete Williams, Doug LaCrosse, and Rick Woulfe.
