Florida's top amateur golfers compete this week, June 22-25, for the title of the 100th Florida State Amateur Champion. Taking place in Jupiter at The Bear's Club and Lost Tree Club, Florida's top amateur golfers will begin their quest for the championship Thursday.
This year, 14 clubs across the state held qualifiers for nearly 900 participants that wanted to earn their spot in the Championship. Those participating in the championship this week will play 18 holes each at The Bear's Club and Lost Tree Club on June 22 & 23 before the field is cut to low 70 and ties. The final two rounds will take place at The Bear's Club on Saturday and Sunday.
Back to defend his title is Jacob Huizinga of Orlando who captured the title in 2016 after shooting a 16-under par 272 total. Joining Huizinga as State Amateur Champions are Jimmy Jones, Jr. (2015), Gabe Lench (2014), Doug LaCrosse (1992), and Robbie David (1990).
The field features a variety of ages with the average age being 27 years old. The youngest competitors in the field are Sam Nicholson, Tyler Wilkes, and Thomas Salanito, all of whom are 15 years old. The most experienced players in the field are Rick Woulfe, Mike Bodney, and 1992 champion Doug LaCrosse. Brothers John & Peter Wegmann and Father-Son duo Chad & Chase Ibbotson are two pairs of players that are making the 100th Amateur Championship a family affair.
Beginning in 1914, the Florida Amateur Championship is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida. Past champions include Bob Murphy and Jerry Pate as well as PGA Tour players David Peoples, Chris Couch, Barry Cheesman, and Blayne Barber.
