The first day at the 56th Senior Amateur Championship at Bradenton Country Club is complete. Reigning Champion, Peter Wegmann, set the pace after round one vying to become the first player since 1989 to defend his title. Wegmann, of Fort Lauderdale, birdied the third, 10th and 11th hole to finish at two under-par 69. Two players, Robert Polk and Bret Voisin, lurk one stroke behind at 70. Both Voisin and Polk will head into round two playing for their first Senior Amateur Championship victory.
The leaderboard heading into day two is a tight race between strong competitors. Doug LaCrosse, 2013 Senior Amateur Champion, is tied with Buck Baumann two shots off the lead. The duo are tied for fourth place at even par 71. 2015 Senior Amateur Match Play Champion, K C Fox, is tied for sixth place with Mark McLain at one over-par (72). After Wednesday’s round the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties before the final 18 holes is played on Thursday, April 13th.
