Joe Alfieri Leads 95th Amateur

Joe Alfieri posted a two round total of four-under par 140 to take a one stroke lead heading into the weekend of the 95th Florida State Amateur Championship at The Bear’s Club and The Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter. The Championship continues with 75 competitors advancing to play the final 36 holes at The Bear’s Club, June 23-24.

Joe Alfieri, of Lutz, stands alone atop the leaderboard after 36-holes of play. In the first round Alfieri carded a one-over par 73 at The Loxahatchee Club, to trail the first round leaders by five strokes heading into the second round of play. Alfieri tamed The Bear’s Club in the second round, firing the low round of the Championship with a five-under par 67, which included seven birdies with only two bogeys. Alfieri is looking to add his first Florida State Amateur Championship to his impressive resume.

Chase Seiffert, of Panama City, currently sits alone in second place after a 36-hole total of three-under par 141. Seiffert, currently a member of the Florida State University golf team, fired an impressive round of four-under par 68, to hold a share of the lead after the first round. Seiffert continued his solid play at The Bear’s Club on Friday, with a round of one-over par 73.  The 2010 Champion Sean Dale, of Jacksonville, is alone in third place with a tournament total of one-under par 143. Dale will look to join elite amateur status by trying to claim his second Florida State Amateur title. The Defending Champion Tyler McCumber, of Ponte Vedra Beach, will be around for the weekend after a two-round total of eight-over par 152.  Both courses played extremely difficult to the best amateurs in the state the first two days, with The Bear’s Club playing to an 81.2 stroke average and The Loxahatchee Club playing to a 79.2.

Started in 1914, the Florida Amateur Championship is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida. Past Amateur champions include Bob Murphy, Jerry Pate, and PGA Tour players David Peoples, Chris Couch, and Barry Cheesman.
