Rick Woulfe, Senior Player of the Year from 2005 to 2012, fired an impressive five-under par 66 to lead the Florida Senior Open after the first round. Fort Lauderdale resident, Woulfe, started the Championship on the East Course with an eagle on the par five second hole. He followed his eagle with a birdie on holes four and six to finish the front-nine at four-under par, 32. Despite two bogeys on the back-nine, Woulfe posted birdies on holes 12, 14, and 17 for a 34, 18-hole total 66. Rick, an amateur player, will tee off on the West Course tomorrow morning at 8:27 and play to keep his lead.
Following one-stroke behind Woulfe are three players tied for second, Eduardo Herrera, David Hoover, and Brigham Gibbs. Professional, Herrera, of Windermere, shot 67 on the East Course, while Hoover, a professional from Crawfordville, played the West Course in his first round. Gibbs, of Miami, is the only amateur tied for second who posted his four-under par round on the West Course. Two players are tied for fifth at three-under par, 68; Tom Bryant and David Tassell. Defending champion, Gary Koch, and 2014 Senior Player of the Year, Pete Williams, are both tied for seventh place after a two-under par 69.Twenty-seven out of the 153 players scored even-par or better in the first round of the Senior Open.
The players will tee off tomorrow starting at 8:00 for the second round before the cut to the low 60 players and ties. All players will play two rounds on both the East and West Course at Belleair Country Club. The final round will be conducted on the West Course on Sunday, August 16th.
