David Anthony Sails to Fourth Championship Victory

DADE CITY, Fla. – The Super-Senior Championship has come to a close as David Anthony raised the trophy at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club and captured his fourth Super-Senior

Amateur victory in the past five years. It was a true test of golf over the three days as the competitors faced tough playing conditions. However, the weather was no match for Antohny as he fired a four-under-par, 68 in the final round and a tournament total of eight-under-par to grab the victory and outlast the field by eight strokes. The championship consists of 54-holes of gross individual stroke play in which the field is cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round.

The first round brought excellent playing conditions and Doug Snoap took advantage of the opportunity to post a low score. Snoap posted six birdies en-route to a five-under-par, 67. He lead the way by three strokes over three-time champion, David Anthony, who posted a two-under-par, 70. Anthony carded five birdies in the first round to hold solo second place. Moreover, Michael McNeely, held third place with an opening round of even-par, 72.

The second round brought less than favorable playing conditions. Rain loomed nearby and the winds raged, gusting up to 40 miles per hour at various points throughout the day. However, the challenging conditions were no match for David Anthony as he posted another round of two-under-par, 70 to hold a tournament total of four-under-par, four strokes over Peter Wegmann. Anthony carded four birdies during his second round and only two bogeys. In addition, only three other players fired under-par scores during the second round. Steven Walzak with a 68, Peter Wegmann with a 70, and Pete Williams with a 71, all moved up the leaderboard heading into the final round. Upon completion of the second round, sixty-four players made the cut at thirteen-over-par or better to advance to the final round.

The final round saw a remarkable change in weather from the day before. The sun was shining and the winds were calm. Three-time champion, David Anthony led the way with Doug Snoap, Peter Wegmann, and Bob Mathers all playing together in the final pairing. Anthony took off with the lead as he expanded it to eight strokes over the final eighteen holes. The former Super-Senior Player of the Year posted five birdies and one eagle to post the low score of the day, a four-under-par, 68. He explained, "I did not have expectations coming into this tournament. I hit good shots the first and second day to get me rolling. Then I eagled the fifth hole today and that gave me the confidenct to get through the day." Furthermore, Anthony explained how this victory felt to him. He said, "It means a lot. I am just very fortunate. I come out here and win four out of five and it doesn't happen very often and I feel very fortunate and thankful. You meet the finest people playing this game and it's such a blessing."

In addition, Doug Snoap climbed into solo second place with a final round of one-under-par, 71. Bradley Rollinson secured third place after firing a one-under-par, 71 in the final round. The final round saw the most players under par, with eight competitors posting red numbers for the final eighteen holes of the tournament.

All in all, it was another great Super-Senior Amateur championship to start the season. It comes as no surprise to see David Anthony holding yet another well-deserved trophy.
