Four Champions Crowned at Men's Net

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. Kris Vassallo, Michael Volcan, David Bailey and Ron Bauman raised the trophies at the Men's Net Championship on Sunday at Mission Inn Resort & Club. Vassallo was victorious in the Under 50 Division, while Volcan prevailed in the 50-59 Division. Bailey came out on top in the 60-69 Division, and Bauman took home the win in the 70 & Over Division.

Under 50 Division

Vassallo captured his second-straight Men’s Net Championship in wire-to-wire fashion. He took a share of the 18-hole lead after a first-round 74 on Saturday, with two net birdies and a gross birdie.

The Bradenton native used the only under-par round of the championship in the final round to secure the victory. Vassallo carded three net birdies and two gross birdies on Sunday to post a 1-under 71 and take home the three-shot win.

David Mealey put together two rounds of 74 to finish second at 4-over 148, while John Walters finished in third at 5-over 149, adding a net eagle in the final round.

50-59 Division

Volcan earned his second Men’s Net Championship victory, after winning the 50-64 Division in 2018. The Stuart native finished Saturday’s first round in a tie for first place at 2-over 74, finishing the day with two net birdies. He secured the win on Sunday with a 2-over 74, adding five net birdies in the final round.

Deon du Plessis finished second at 9-over 153, while Graham Tomlinson finished one shot back at 10-over 154.

60-69 Division

David Bailey picked up his first FSGA championship win with a 3-under 141 for the championship. After a first-round 73, Bailey sat one shot back of the leader, Ivan Marin. The New Smyrna Beach used seven gross birdies in the final round to fire a 68 to capture the win.

Marin finished second at 4-over 148, while Guillermo Duenas finished one shot back at 5-over 149 in third place.

70 & Over Division

Bauman went wire-to-wire to earn his second-straight Men’s Net Championship win at 2-over 146. The Clermont native used a first-round 67 to take a five-shot lead into Sunday’s final round. He secured the win a final-round 79.

Rick Page took home second palce at 5-over 149, while Donald Tarca finished third at 11-over 155.

Handicap:  Florida GHIN 24.0 or less

Most Active Players 
  • 25 spots reserved for our "most active" FSGA One-Day Players
  • Most Active definition - Playing in 20 or more One-Day events during the 2019 season and returning a score. NO EXCEPTIONS
  • Most Active players entries will be first come first served and will be processed as soon as their entry is received
  • If the reserve spots fill before the deadline, all remaining entries will be treated as first come first serve
  • Deadline will be 7/15/2020 for most active players to submit their entry

Entries will be processed once players have completed 3 One-Days in the 2019 or 2020 season, and will be first come first serve.

Entry Fee

$150 - Entry fee includes both competitive rounds, cart fees, tee gift, and gift certificate prizes

Late entries will be accepted subject to a $10 late entry fee should the entrant gain acceptance into the field.

Championship Format

  • 36 holes of net individual stroke play
  • Maximum Field Size - 96 players
  • All players will play to 95% of their lowest index (LI) starting on January 6, 2020.
  • Players must play in their respective age division

If there is a tie in any division, a modified USGA score card playoff will be completed using net scores. The tie breaker will be as follows:

  • Final 18 holes
  • Final 9 holes, then final six holes, then final 3 holes and finally the 18th hole score. 
  • If there is still a tie, a coin flip will determine the Champion

Eligibility

  • Must be a male amateur regular member or higher of the FSGA
  • Must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index 24.0 or less.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older by the first day of the Championship.
  • Must have played in at least 3 One-Day events in 2019 or in the current 2020 calendar year as of the close of entries, September 9th.
  • Entries will be processed after your 3rd event is complete and a score is registered, first come first serve.

Entry Priority

Entries will be accepted based upon the order of receipt. Entries received after the competitive field is full or after the close of entries, will be placed on an alternates list. Alternates will be contacted in the order of receipt of entry, if and when, a spot becomes available.

Handicaps

  • All players will play to 95% of their lowest index (LI) starting on January 6, 2020.
  • Handicap indexes will be taken from the GHIN update on Monday, September 21, 2020.
  • All players must have a valid Florida GHIN Handicap Index of 24.0 or less.

  • El Campeon Course - 7:30 AM - 9:20 AM - Round 2 tee times off  holes 1&10 of El Campeon

Course Set-up

  • Under 50 Age Division - 6,300 - 6,500 yards approximately 
  • 50-59 Age Division - 6,000 - 6,200 yards approximately 
  • 60-69 Age Division - 5,500 - 5,700 yards approximately
  • 70 & Over Age Division - 5,500 - 5,700 yards approximately

**Players must play in their respective age division as of the last day of the Championship**

**No pairing requests will be honored for this Championship**

Practice Round and Practice Facility Information

Practice rounds are available three weeks prior to the Championship. Practice rounds may be played after 12:00 PM on the weekends. The price for a practice round is $35.00 plus tax. Please call 352-324-3885 to arrange your practice round. The proper place to practice your golf swing is on the driving range. Hitting multiple shots on any hole on the course is unacceptable.

Carts

Carts are included for all competitive rounds and all players MUST ride.  Players are responsible for practice round fees.

Defending Champions

Kris Vassalo claimed the honors in the 50 and under age division, shooting a net 69-74--143. In the 50-64 age division, Robert Shourds posted 70-71 for a 141 total and took home the victory. Ron Bauman claimed the 65 & older title with consecutive rounds of 67-73 for a 140 total. Click here to view previous year's results.
