Debra Goes Wire-to-Wire to Win Forty & Over

TAMPA, Fla. Daniel Debra went wire-to-wire to capture the Forty & Over Championship on Sunday. The Lutz native carded an 8-under 208 to raise the trophy Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club.

Beginning the final round with a five-shot lead over the field, Debra finished the front nine at 2-over, carding two bogeys. He posted three birdies on the back nine to finish the day with an even-par 72 and secure the two-shot victory.

Debra used rounds of 68-68-72 to win his third FSGA championship and his first since the 2018 Mid-Senior Four-Ball Championship.

Joe Alfieri fired a final-round 67 to take home a second-place finish. The 2019 champion began the day with three birdies and a bogey on the front nine. Alfieri posted a bogey-free back nine, adding three birdies to finish the championship at 6-under 210. His final-round 67 was the low round of the championship.

Alfieri and Debra were the only two players in the field to post three rounds at even-par or better.

Miles McConnell finished the weekend in third place at 2-under 214, with a final-round 71. Sam Hogan and Steve Albright tied for fourth place at even-par 216, while three players were tied for sixth.

Entries for tournaments scheduled in June and early July will be processed (charged) when we are certain the tournament will be conducted. State and county guidelines may require us to modify the field size. If the field size is modified, the FSGA reserves the right to modify the field determination process.

The Forty & Over Championship (formerly the Mid-Senior Championship) is a great opportunity for scratch players to compete against their peers, bridging the gap between Mid-Amateur events (25 & up), and Senior events (55 & up). The championship garners a crowd of guys who are excited to compete against peers for the weekend, playing golf on Friday and Saturday morning, before returning to the resort and their families in the afternoon.

Defending Champion

It took a couple extra holes, but Joe Alfieri was crowned the Mid-Senior Champion. The Lutz native defeated Daniel Owen in a two-hole playoff to raise the trophy on Sunday at Laurel Oak Country Club.

Alfieri, the overnight leader, and four-time FSGA Player of the Year, finished off his front nine with a birdie on the eighth. He birdied two of this first four holes on the back to move to 9-under for the championship. He added one more birdie on the back nine to head to the final hole at 10-under with a two-shot lead over Daniel Owen and Owen Joyner at 8-under. Alfieri bogeyed the final hole, while Owen’s birdie on the 18th forced a playoff, both players finishing at 9-under 207.

Owen had a rough start to the round with a double bogey on the first hole. He bounced back quick, playing the rest of the round bogey-free. The Ocala native carded two birdies on the front nine and added four on the back nine, including two-straight birdies to finish the round. He posted a final-round 4-under 68, the low round of the day.

After both players made par on the first playoff hole, Alfieri and Owen headed to the par-5 17th hole. Owen missed his birdie putt and tapped in for par, while Alfieri rolled in a 10-foot putt for birdie to secure the championship.
