Four Teams Earn Net Four-Ball Wins

ALVA, Fla. – Four teams were crowned Men’s Net Four-Ball champions at River Hall Country Club. Avid players in FSGA One-Day events filled the field to battle for the win across four age divisions. Tim Woodward and Larry Leppo captured the 60-69 Division, Gene Weaver and Scott Collins won the 50-59 Division, Josh Benson and Shawn Hall were victorious in the Under 50 Division and Danilo Liwanag and Rommel Lozada claimed the 70 & Over Division (pictured left to right).

Under 50 Division

The final round finished with four teams tied at the top at 11-under 133. Round one leaders, Brian Soldano and David Mealey, followed up a day one 64 with a 3-under 69 to fall into a tie for first. The teams of Mark Jerkins/Matt Ruthven and Mike See/Michael Ulsh started the final round tied for second with a score of 67. Both teams moved into the tie for first after posting another tied round of 66.

Starting the final round four strokes out of first place, the team of Josh Benson and Shawn Hall advanced up the leaderboard. The duo from Naples evenly contributed to posting seven birdies for a second round score of 65 to tie for the lead. A modified USGA scorecard playoff broke the four-way tie crowning Benson and Hall champions with the lowest final round score. See and Ulsh finished in second place after a scorecard playoff boiling down to the score of the last six holes between Jerkins and Ruthven who took third place. After recently winning the Men’s Net Two-Man Shoot-Out, Soldano and Mealey finished in fourth.

50-59 Division

Round one finished with Freddy Tapanes and Patrick Abaca in first place with a 7-under 65. Following one stroke back was the team of Gene Weaver, of Vero Beach, and Scott Collins, of Coral Springs. Weaver and Collins started the final round strong, vying to take the lead after five birdies on the front-nine. A second round 68 secured a victory for the duo at 10-under 134.

Two consistent rounds of 69 from Rob Bloom and Michael Mendoza, placed the team in second, four-strokes back. A final round of 68 earned Tim Carpenter and Jim Marcelak a third place finish with a 5-under 139 score, while Tapanes and Abaca finished in fourth.

60-69 Division

Tim Woodward and Larry Leppo broke a round one tie for first at 5-under 67, with a second round 68 to finish as champions. Woodward, 2013 Men’s Net champion, and Leppo posted three eagles over two rounds to capture the win at 9-under 135.

After a round one tie with the team from Naples, Woodward and Leppo, Mark Williams and Steven Hauser fell to fourth place despite posting ten birdies over two rounds to finish at 7-under 137. Consistency was key for T Nowzamani and Tasso Sterghos. The team carded an eagle in the final round to finish with two rounds of 68 in second place, one stroke back. Michael Schmidt and John Seaman claimed third place due to a final round of 68 and tied Williams and Hauser at seven under-par.

70 & Over Division

Wire-to-wire victory in consistent style captured first place for the team of Danilo Liwanag and Rommel Lozada. Liwanag, of Dade City, and Lozada, of Lutz, posted the tournament low score of 12-under 132 to win by eight strokes. The team carded 13 birdies and two eagles over two rounds to claim victory. After coming off a win at the Men’s Net Two-Man Shoot-Out, the team of Jack Gleason and Bobby Kilgore finished in second place with two rounds of 70. A second round of 71 gave Art Mann and John Christensen a third place finish at 4-under 140.
